About the Department
Conduct technical laboratory analyses of the City’s potable water, surface and ground water, wastewater and sludge to determine compliance with federal, state, and local water quality regulations. Administer analytical cross-training program. Maintain detailed documentation as required. Maintain a clean and orderly laboratory. Must be comfortable working with children for the purposes of AS2I. Perform work and administrative duties as directed.
Position Duties
- Follow SOP’s for all laboratory activities.
- Sample receipt and log in.
- Cross-train and demonstrate analytical proficiency in sample collection, wet chemistry, solids, demands, microbiology, *micro QC, *nutrients and *metals.
- Prepare and document all chemical solutions, reagents, and standards.
- Maintain and validate field equipment.
- Execute advanced mathematic equations.
- Prepare and maintain monthly sample collection kits reflected by the sampling calendar.
- Use commercial computer software to collect, evaluate and report analytical data adhering to EPA 2185 – Good Automated Laboratory Practices.
- Implement and manage technology solutions and artificial intelligence (AI) to optimize laboratory operations, enhance data analysis, improve experimental setups, and ensure high standards of quality control.
- Detection Limit (MDL) determinations validated every 6 months
- Initial Demonstration of Capability (DOC) and ongoing demonstration every 6 months.
- Sample analyses using approved methodologies including necessary field measurements.
- Inform clients of time sensitive data (i.e. water main break, well clearance, daily process control, etc.)
- Assess quality control measures and make any necessary corrections.
- Accurately transcribe analytical data and submit for QA Review.
- Comply with the NELAC Standard of documentation.
- Maintain inventory of required chemicals, equipment, and materials and initiate purchase requests.
- Monitor hazardous waste satellite accumulation zones.
- *Maintain up-to-date knowledge of federal and state drinking and environmental water rules for sampling and analysis.
- *Assist in SOP updates as rules and methods change.
- Participate in the Altamonte Springs Science Incubator (AS2I) as directed by the Laboratory Technical Director (Lab coat logistics, walking tour and instruction as needed).
- Be available for on-call rotations along with weekend and holiday work.
- Maintain a clean and orderly laboratory.
- Drive to and from various city work locations. Perform additional duties as assigned. Be available for emergency call-outs.
- In the event of an emergency, all employees are considered essential and may be required to perform duties outside of their normal job description.
- Complete required trainings as specified within the City Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan.
Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Biology or Environmental Science or an equivalent combination of education and analytical experience.
- *Four (4) years of analytical experience equivalent to Chemist I.
- Experience using spreadsheet and portable document format (PDF) software.
- Valid driver license. Must obtain Florida driver license within thirty (30) days of employment.
- Complete required trainings as specified within the City’s Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan.
- Willingness to adopt AI and emerging technologies.

Other Qualifications
Applicants will be required to complete a Disclosure & Authorization Regarding Background Investigation, a Confidentiality Agreement and a criminal background screening.
Driving history for the past three (3) years must reflect no violations of a driving related felony offense, or driving under the influence (DUI) which includes both drugs and alcohol, reckless driving, or hit and run involving an occupied vehicle or attended property, or an accumulation of traffic violations, plus three (3) points for each attendance at driving school (regardless of whether points were assessed against the license) where the penalty points do not exceed twelve (12).
Position is considered at-risk for exposure to Hepatitis A and B during performance of regular duties. An acceptance/declination of vaccination form is required.
