A well-established and growing organization in the Greater Appleton area is seeking a Controller to lead its financial operations and play a pivotal role on the leadership team. This is a highly visible role that ensures accuracy, compliance, and efficiency across all accounting functions while also driving strategic financial planning and analysis.
The ideal candidate is a strong leader with deep accounting expertise, proven team management skills, and the ability to translate financial data into meaningful insights that influence executive decision-making.
The Controller oversees all financial activities for the organization and its affiliated entities. This includes supervising the finance team, preparing and reviewing financial reports, managing budgets and forecasts, ensuring compliance with GAAP, and safeguarding company assets. As a trusted business partner to the C-Suite, the Controller provides timely reporting, variance analysis, and recommendations that support growth and long-term success.
Requirements
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Strategy
- Drive financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting across the organization.
- Supervise, mentor, and hold financial team members accountable for accuracy, efficiency, and compliance.
- Serve as the final point of review for all financial reports, reconciliations, and transactions.
- Partner with the leadership team to present monthly results, dashboards, and KPIs while explaining variances and recommending strategies.
- Participate in strategic planning, risk assessment, and growth initiatives as an active member of the leadership team.
Financial Operations & Compliance
- Oversee preparation and review of financial statements, budgets, and reports.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, internal controls, and all audit/tax requirements.
- Manage external relationships with auditors, banks, tax preparers, and insurance providers.
- Develop and maintain financial policies and procedures that safeguard company assets and minimize risk.
Accounting Oversight
- Oversee payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, job cost reporting, and credit card programs.
- Review and approve payroll registers, reconciliations, and journal entries.
- Maintain fixed asset records, depreciation schedules, and cash flow management.
- Lead monthly and annual close processes across multiple entities.
- Support leadership and HR with annual bonus, merit, and commission plan design.
Performance Monitoring & Reporting
- Develop dashboards and KPIs for leadership and department managers.
- Monitor and balance cash flows to optimize financial performance.
- Provide timely job cost reports, WIP (work-in-progress) calculations, and variance analysis.
- Identify cost savings, efficiencies, and areas for process improvement.
Continuous Improvement & Collaboration
- Actively participate in project meetings, providing financial insights to guide decision-making.
- Develop work instructions, streamline processes, and establish best practices for the finance team.
- Proactively resolve discrepancies, risks, or compliance concerns.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align financial operations with overall business goals.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or MBA strongly preferred).
- Proven leadership experience in finance/accounting; experience in construction, manufacturing, or project-based industries preferred.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, audits, tax compliance, and internal controls.
- Proficiency in accounting platforms, financial modeling, and reporting tools.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to present financial data clearly to executives.
- High attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and proactive problem-solving ability.
