ABOUT THE ROLE:
The Optician is responsible for providing exceptional customer service and technical expertise in the selection, fitting, and dispensing of eyeglasses and contact lenses. This role focuses on assisting patients in choosing appropriate frames and lenses based on prescription and lifestyle needs, ensuring accurate measurements, and maintaining up-to-date knowledge of products and optical technologies. The Optician acts as a key resource for patients and supports office operations to deliver a quality eye care experience.
FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:
- Providing exceptional customer service by greeting patients and visitors in a warm and welcoming manner.
- Answering phone calls, responding to emails, scheduling appointments, and addressing general inquiries to assist patients promptly.
- Assisting patients in selecting appropriate eyeglass frames and lenses based on prescriptions, facial features, lifestyle needs, and budget.
- Educating patients about available lens options, coatings, and the benefits of different products.
- Taking precise measurements of patients’ eyes and facial features to ensure proper fit and optimal vision correction.
- Verifying prescriptions and preparing orders for eyeglasses and contact lenses with accuracy.
- Processing payments via cash, credit, or check efficiently and accurately.
- Collaborating with the team to manage inventory, ensuring that frames, lenses, and accessories are available and organized.
- Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of the latest eyeglass trends, lens technologies, and product offerings to provide informed recommendations to patients.
- Working closely with clinicians, technicians, and other staff members within Eye Care to coordinate patient care, contribute to smooth office operations, and deliver a quality eye care experience to a diverse patient population.
- Participating in regular team meetings to discuss workflow, share information, and engage in ongoing training and development.
- Supporting quality improvement initiatives and maintaining compliance with Eye Care & Community Health guidelines, standards, and policies.
- Contributing to a positive, collaborative atmosphere that promotes excellent customer service, equitable access, and patient satisfaction.
OTHER DUTIES:
- Participates in Relias Training and completes by due date assigned.
- Attends meetings when required.
- Works as a team player and follows organizational Code of Conduct.
- Willingness to take on additional responsibilities when asked.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma
- Must complete either a two-year ophthalmic dispensing program, a two-year practical training/apprenticeship, or a comparable two-year program from the National Academy of Opticianry
- Must have passed the National Optician Competency Examination (NOCE)
- Previous experience in Eye Care is required
- Vermont unrestricted Optician license
SKILLS REQUIRED FOR SUCCESS:
- Proficiency in using tools like lensmeters, edgers, and other specialized instruments for measurements and fabrication.
- Understanding various lens materials, coatings, design principles, and different frame styles to provide appropriate recommendations.
- Ability to accurately interpret optical prescriptions and translate them into lens and frame orders.
- Technical skill in fitting eyeglasses and contact lenses to achieve a precise and comfortable fit.
- Excellent hand-eye coordination and dexterity to perform adjustments and repairs on eyewear with small tools and parts.
- Ability to clearly explain product options, provide instructions on eyewear care, and build rapport with patients.
- Patience, friendliness, and the ability to assess patient needs to ensure satisfaction.
- Knowledge of sales techniques and product promotion to help customers make informed choices.
- High accuracy in taking measurements, recording information, and maintaining customer files.
- Ability to efficiently manage multiple tasks and prioritize duties in a busy environment.
- Basic knowledge of inventory management, sales, and processing insurance claims and payments.
- Ability to identify issues and implement solutions, such as determining the best materials for a customer's preferences or lifestyle.
- Capacity to stay current with new industry trends and technological advancements.
- Skill in considering factors to choose the most appropriate products and services for each patient.
