JOB TITLE: ASSISTANT HEAD CUSTODIAN (SCHOOL-BASED)
LOCATION: Crow Island School
CHARACTERISTICS: Site-Based Custodian, 12-month contract (260 days) in accordance with SEIU #73 Collective Bargaining Agreement.
REPORTS TO: Head Custodian, Director of Buildings and Grounds, and the Building Principal
COORDINATES: School-site custodial staff
EVALUATION: Evaluated annually by the School Principal, in collaboration with the Director of Buildings and Grounds and Head Custodian
OVERVIEW OF THE POSITION
To provide a safe and clean learning environment by maintaining high standards of safety, cleanliness and efficiency. Takes pride in having the school be a beautiful and welcoming learning environment for students, staff, and all others. Serves in the assistant lead custodial role in the school.
RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Works with the Head Custodian to organize building cleaning plan and expectations for all custodians, as well as assigning additional tasks as needed.
Maintains building and premises to be neat and clean at all times. Keeps grounds free from rubbish.
Reports to and remains at work per stated work hours; remains on school premises during shift, except for lunch breaks. However, the building needs to be occupied by a custodial staff member at all times.
Open and closes the building in a proper and timely manner. Secure all doors and windows and turn off designated lights.
Ensures that door and windows open, close and lock. If doors or windows don’t function properly, inform head custodian.
Shovels and sands/salts sidewalks as appropriate.
Moves furniture, equipment and supplies as required for school activities.
Cleans corridors (sweep and mop floors, clear area of rubbish), bathrooms (scrub and disinfect bathroom toilets and sinks, mop and disinfect floors) and corridor drinking fountains (scrub and disinfect) daily. Cleans entrance areas daily (sweep/vacuum/mop entrance areas, clear area of rubbish). Washed entrance windows at least bi-weekly (every other week), and as directed for special events.
In the rooms/areas for which s/he is responsible for cleaning, s/he cleans the chalkboard/whiteboard, sink, vacuums or sweeps the floor every day, and wipes the countertops once per week.
Reports damage of school property immediately upon being known.
Reports needed repairs to the Head Custodian and makes minor repairs as directed by the Head Custodian.
Provides assistance to after-school-hours groups who are using the building if needed.
Complies with local, state and federal ordinances for storage and disposal of trash and waste.
Completes all District compliance training as required.
Acts as Head Custodian when Head Custodian is not at school.
ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Perform other duties as directed by the Superintendent, Director of Buildings and Grounds, Principals or Head Custodian.
EDUCATIONAL PREPARATION/ CERTIFICATES/ QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from high school or technical school or comparable experience preferred.
Working knowledge of the methods, tools, mechanical equipment and techniques used in custodial work; working knowledge of occupational hazards, safety precautions and fire and sanitation codes.
Ability to operate various types of power and hand machinery and tools as associated with grounds and custodial work.
Ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions/directives with a minimum of direction.
Ability to establish and maintain effective and positive public, student, and co-worker relationships.
Clearance of FBI Background check required.
TB test within 90 days of hire date; Physical Exam within last year of hire date.
Valid First Aid/CPR Cards preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Moderate degree of physical stamina and fitness with occasional lifting up to 50 pounds, and to assist in lifting objects in excess of 50 pounds. Ability to move freely to various locations within the classrooms, offices and other community settings. Frequent standing, walking, sitting, and bending. Exposure to noise and activity of a school setting. Exposure to outdoor weather conditions.

COMPENSATION
Starting Hourly Rate: $20.89/hour with consideration given to years of experience.
