Job Summary

A Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) participates and collaborates as a member of an educational team, by assisting in providing student speech therapy services to special needs students in accordance with the mandates of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. An incumbent works under the supervision of a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist in developing and providing services for individual students to improve their academic performance. About Vacancy: 6 hours per day, 5 days per week, 9 months per fiscal year.

Requirements / Qualifications

Education: Must possess a SLPA associate of arts or sciences degree from a program approved by the Board (includes a minimum of 70 hours of fieldwork) or equivalent SLPA degree program (out of-state training) as approved by the Board (must include a minimum of 70 hours of fieldwork) or bachelor's degree program in Speech-Language Pathology or Communicative Sciences and 70 hours of clinical experience as obtained in a board-approved communicative sciences program or a Board approved SLPA program. Experience: Six months of experience working with individuals with speech and language disabilities in a structured environment. Additional Speech-Language Pathology experience may be substituted for all or part of the required AA degree or equivalent of sixty (60) semester units on the basis of one (1) year of full-time experience being equal to thirty (30) semester units of college courses in Speech-Language Pathology or Communicative Sciences or related field. Special License or Language Skills: Incumbents must provide proof of current registration with the State of California Department of Consumer Affairs Board of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology at the time of appointment and maintain current registration throughout employment in this classification Must possess current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aide certificates from an approved training program

SPECIAL LICENSE OR LANGUAGE SKILLS: Incumbents must provide proof of current registration with the State of California Department of Consumer Affairs Board of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology at the time of appointment and maintain current registration throughout employment in this classification Must possess current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid certificates from an approved training program Possession of a valid Class C driver's license at the time of appointment and the use of a personal automobile Bilingual Certification: Some positions in this class may require the ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing in a language other than English. The following are examples of languages, which may be desired for specific positions: Spanish and Armenian. Selective certification in accordance with Education Code may be effected to meet this requirement. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Lifting and positioning of students weighing forty (40) pounds or less in wheelchairs, or other equipment, two or more staff members will generally lift and position students weighing more than 40 pounds. Hearing and speaking to exchange information. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate adaptive equipment. Seeing to read a variety of materials. Bending at the waist, kneeling, crouching to assist students.
