The Director, Flight Operations Safety provides strong leadership, ensuring that all aviation activities—across both rotary and fixed-wing aircraft—are conducted in full compliance with applicable statutes, regulations, and industry standards. This role is critical to maintaining and advancing a culture of safety across flight operations throughout the Province of Ontario.
As a senior leader within Ornge Global Air, the Director plays a strategic role in shaping safety policy, driving continuous improvement, and fostering collaboration across departments to ensure operational excellence. The successful candidate will be a proactive, relationship-centered leader with deep expertise in aviation safety, risk management, and regulatory compliance.
Key Accountabilities:
- Oversee daily and periodic site auditing, operations monitoring, and the management of a Safety Management System (SMS)
- Lead the development and sustainment of a strong safety culture across all aviation activities
- Investigate aviation occurrences and formulate risk management strategies and procedures
- Provide expert advice and counsel to all departments regarding safe operations and aviation resource management
- Evaluate the financial impact of safety-related decisions and develop strategies to address resource needs
Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with senior leadership to align safety strategies with organizational goals
- Lead the development and execution of departmental strategies and initiatives
- Educate and advise leadership on aviation safety strategies and regulatory obligations
- Prepare and present safety-related reports and updates to the Board of Directors, Committees, and Executive Management Team
- Monitor market trends and evaluate program effectiveness to ensure alignment with business needs
- Act as a consultative resource across Ornge for aviation safety policy, procedures, and performance criteria
- Develop and manage departmental budgets
- Lead and grow a high-performing team, fostering a culture of engagement, accountability, and continuous improvement
- Identify and implement process and technology improvements to enhance efficiency and reduce non-value-added work
- Ensure data integrity and leverage analytics for informed decision-making
- Drive transformation initiatives using change management principles
- Oversee performance management and development planning for managers and professionals within the team
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in aviation safety management or a related field
- Minimum of 10+ years of experience in aviation, with at least 5 years in a senior safety management role
- Experience in a unionized environment and with both rotor and fixed-wing operations
- Proven expertise in developing and administering SMS systems in aviation settings
- Demonstrated experience in aviation risk assessments and incident investigations
- Pilot experience, preferably with exposure to remote or northern operations
- Strong working knowledge of Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs), aviation contract administration, and compliance
- Superior analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
