About the Department

Directs the operation of the County equipment repair shop.  Schedules and supervises the maintenance, repair and replacement of gasoline and diesel engines, related mechanical systems, and specialized equipment. 

Salary upon hire is step 1 through 3 ($36.49/hour - $39.09/hour) dependent upon qualifications. 
Progressive increases are based on years of service with Skagit County, up to 10 total steps (top step $48.55/hour). The Equipment Maintenance Supervisor is range 16 of the General (Non-Union) salary schedule. 

Position Duties

Diagnoses mechanical problems and performs the more complex repairs of trucks, heavy equipment, vehicles and the County ferry.


Assigns work projects and directs the maintenance and repair of engines, equipment and other mechanical systems.  Keeps records of equipment repairs.  Plans for routine maintenance on seasonally used equipment.


Develops other mechanics in their area of work by instruction and training in mechanical repair, preventive maintenance, and service of equipment.


Writes specifications for equipment to be purchased.  Provides input into the development of equipment specifications.


Devises and adapts tools, aids, improved work methods and procedures to accomplish work assignments.


Monitors work in accordance with sound safety practices.


Purchases shop equipment, tools, repair parts and supplies.


Responds to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provides information within scope of knowledge or refers to employee of higher classification.


Supervisory: 

Prioritizes, directs and evaluates the work of mechanic staff.


OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

Performs related duties as assigned. Related duties as required are duties that may not be specifically listed in the Position Description but are within the general occupational series and responsibility level typically associated with the employee’s classification of work.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying.  A typical path to obtain the required qualifications would be:

  • Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in equipment maintenance and repair, with at least two (2) years of supervisory experience. 

Requires knowledge of:

  • Extensive knowledge of equipment and vehicle maintenance and repair procedures.
  • External specialized or supplemental mechanical resources which could be utilized in the repair and maintenance of County equipment.
  • Supervisory principles and practices, union contracts and personnel regulations.
  • Contracting and procurement regulations.

Requires the ability to:

  • Organize and prioritize manpower and projects.
  • Schedule and direct mechanical shop activities and responsibilities considering existing crew, facilities and external resources.
  • Maintain close working relationships with division supervisors, other divisions, and other agency personnel.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Fabricate and weld vehicle body repairs and modifications.
  • Keep accurate records.
  • Demonstrate skilled operation of hand and power tools used in automotive maintenance work.

Licenses and/or Certifications:

Valid Washington State driver's license.

Valid First Aid and CPR certification.

Brake Inspector certification.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Work is normally performed in the shop area. Some outdoor work may be required. Incumbent may be on call 24 hours a day during emergency operations. Work requires standing, bending, crawling, climbing, lifting up to 75 pounds, and sufficient manual dexterity and strength to operate tools and equipment.

Hazards:

Those present in a normal office environment and maintenance shop. Exposure to noise, dirt, fumes, and potential hazards from equipment and hazardous materials.
