Internal Applicants Only - Payroll Administrator
Working within the HR Service Centre in the Payroll team, you will have good knowledge and experience of payroll processing and procedures together with excellent administrative skills and experience of working in a fast-paced office environment. You will be the first point of contact for our customers, whether face-to-face, on the telephone or electronically via a call logging system delivering a professional response to ensure a right first-time resolution. Volume is always high within the payroll section, so the ability to plan, prioritise and organise your own workload to meet a variety of deadlines is essential to helping us deliver a high-quality service, valued by our customers.
This post is full time and open ended.
Salary: £28,031 - £31,236 per annum (Grade 4)

Job Description
- Work within our internal pay team to complete all aspects of payroll, such as - monitoring and calculating absences including sickness and maternity leave, using the government gateway to download tax code information, maintaining colleague records, answering and resolving colleague pay queries and occasionally completing manual calculations to resolve these queries.
- Provide detailed advice and guidance on payroll processes and procedures.
- Establish productive relationships with key individuals (University colleagues and external contacts) to help improve the level of service the team provides to its customers.
- Perform a variety of administrative duties to support the team and department achieve its objectives.
- Gather and analyse data so that informed actions can be made, establishing basic trends and patterns in the data and providing reports and recommendations for management.
- Instruct and guide colleagues across the University with payroll related requests as required.

Person Specification
- Ability to communicate in writing clearly, concisely, and effectively to provide detailed advice and guidance on payroll processes.
- Evidence of a good standard of numeracy and IT literacy.
- Experience of working in an administrative role or environment and ability to set up standard office systems and procedures, making improvements to these as appropriate.
- Ability to communicate specialist and complex information effectively and professionally to a range of customers with varying levels of understanding.
- Ability to explore customers’ needs and adapt the service you provide accordingly to ensure a quality service is delivered.
- Ability to use your initiative and creativity to solve problems, respond to queries and make recommendations, identifying and proposing practical solutions.
- Ability to work unsupervised to tight deadlines, planning, setting and monitoring your priorities and those of the team.
- Experience of working in an in-house payroll team. Completing all aspects of payroll, particularly absences, PAYE and gross to net calculations.
- Keen eye for detail, particularly identifying breaks in patterns when working with high volumes of data or transactions
Desirable Criteria
- Experience of working in a similar role or environment, e.g. Higher Education.
- Ability to speak/understand Welsh or a willingness to learn.
- Experience in working with a high volume, transactional payroll role.
- Qualification in payroll
- Previously worked with People-XD or similar HR/Payroll software.
