The Company

Verve, a wholly owned subsidiary of Eli Lilly & Co. within Lilly Research Labs, is a clinical-stage genetic medicines company established with a mission to solve the global health epidemic of cardiovascular disease. Founded by world-leading experts in cardiovascular medicine, human genetics and gene-editing, Verve is pioneering a new approach to the care of cardiovascular disease, potentially transforming treatment from chronic management to single-course gene editing medicines. The company’s initial three programs – VERVE-101, VERVE-102, and VERVE-201 – target genes that have been extensively validated as targets for lowering low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), a root cause of cardiovascular disease. VERVE-101 and VERVE-102 are designed to permanently turn off the PCSK9 gene in the liver and are being developed initially for heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH) and ultimately to treat atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) patients not at goal on oral therapy. VERVE-201 is designed to permanently turn off the ANGPTL3 gene in the liver and is initially being developed for homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HoFH) and ultimately to treat patients with refractory hypercholesterolemia. In 2024, Verve was named a Top Place to Work by The Boston Globe for the fourth consecutive year. Verve is headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts.

The Position

We are seeking a passionate and detail-oriented Scientist to join our fast-paced Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) team, supporting the execution of high-quality library preparation and sequencing workflows for multiple gene editing and molecular biology projects. This is an exciting opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a collaborative environment, contributing to groundbreaking scientific research while working under the guidance of subject matter experts. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong technical skills, adaptability, and a growth mindset, taking initiative in laboratory operations, assisting in the onboarding of new assays and instruments, and actively contributing to cross-functional research initiatives that advance innovative gene editing technologies.  This is a lab-based role and requires a minimum of 4-days on-site each week.

Job Responsibilities

  • Conduct, and troubleshoot experiments in alignment with SOPs and expert guidance, including independent preparation of high-quality next-generation sequencing libraries for diverse applications using both automated (e.g., Bravo, Hamilton) and manual methods.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory instruments including Illumina sequencers, long-read sequencing platforms such as PacBio, and ancillary equipment such as Fragment Analyzer, TapeStation and qPCR systems among others.
  • Perform data analysis, manage results, and ensure rigorous documentation practices aligned with Good Documentation Practices (GDPs).
  • Author protocols, technical reports, and summaries, presenting findings to cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the evaluation and integration of new technologies and assay improvements to enhance sequencing workflows, data quality, and scientific rigor through innovation and literature-based insights.
  • Partner cross-functionally with lab teams, bioinformatics, and project stakeholders to coordinate timelines and activities.
  • Maintain a safe, efficient lab environment through good equipment maintenance and strict adherence to provided SOPs.
  • Thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment by balancing multiple priorities, maintaining high standards of quality and organization, and demonstrating initiative in personal growth through continuous learning.
  • Collaborate effectively across functions, foster an inclusive team culture, and contribute to shared goals by supporting others’ development and driving continuous process improvement.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Education & Experience
    • Bachelor’s degree in relevant scientific discipline.
    • 1-3 years relevant industry experience required.
    • Experience in amplicon sequencing or the use of NGS for high-throughput screening is a plus.
    • Experience with Illumina library preparation is a plus.
  • Skills & Abilities
    • Ability to execute experiments at the bench, analyze data, and prepare comprehensive reports.
    • Ability to leverage critical thinking and problem-solving skills for data troubleshooting.
    • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate technical concepts to diverse audiences.
    • Ability to adhere to protocols and Good Laboratory Practices (GLPs).
    • Ability to use statistical analysis tools and standard productivity software (e.g., Word, Excel).
    • Ability to work independently or as part of a team, managing multiple projects and adapting to shifting priorities.
    • Active listener who fosters open communication, values diverse perspectives, and creates an inclusive environment.
    • Proactively challenges established norms, embraces change, and learns from mistakes to overcome obstacles.
    • Committed to achieving high-quality results with integrity while fostering strong team collaboration and supporting others.
    • Celebrates team successes, motivates others, and creates a supportive, collaborative atmosphere.
    • Strong attention to detail, ensuring accurate data production and thorough documentation.
    • Excellent organizational skills, capable of managing multiple tasks simultaneously while meeting deadlines.
