About the Role

You will be responsible, with the assistance of Pathologists, Principal Scientist and the Grade 3 scientist Automated Chemistry, for the performance of assays in the automated area so that they produce accurate, high quality and timely results and reports.

Duties

  • Oversee the quality of the Automated Chemistry section, including participating in reviewing internal and external QC and QA programs while using Excel and Q-Pulse to review and record non-conformances.
  • Take overall responsibility for ensuring documentation relevant to the section is written to NATA specifications and is up-to-date. Assist in reviews of procedures or protocols used in the section as required in line with NATA, NPACC or governing body recommendations and guidelines.
  • You will assist in maintaining the training, education and competency of staff within the section.
  • Ensure equipment maintenance, troubleshooting and record keeping is kept according to protocols. Assist where required to maintain continuity of service.
  • Oversee the ABL90 blood gas instrument usage within and external to the Fitzroy campus. Use AQURE to monitor performance and assist where needed in the training of non-laboratory staff to operate the instrument.
  • Oversee the development of new or implementation of improved methods within the department in line with the quality objectives of Biochemistry.



Classifications for this position will range from RZ5 - RZ7 ($127 535- $148 309 per annum).

Your Contribution

  • A Bachelor’s degree in science or applied science or equivalent
  • High level knowledge in the area of clinical and laboratory Chemical Pathology
  • A high level of technical expertise in operation and trouble-shooting a range of general chemistry laboratory instrumentation.
  • Relevant medical laboratory experience in a tertiary hospital or private pathology laboratory in a day-to-day management role.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a team.
  • Current National criminal history check, or willing to obtain/ Current NDIS Worker Screening Check, or willing to obtain (Select which is applicable)

About the Biochemistry Department
The Biochemistry Department is a major section of St Vincent’s Pathology, performing and supporting the results of specialist studies and analysis including molecular biology (PCR), protein electrophoresis, immunochemistry, specific IgE assays, chromatography, immunosuppressant monitoring, breath testing, autoimmune serology, blood gases and automated general biochemical analysis.  The department is closely integrated with St Vincent’s Pathology Point of Care Testing (POCT) services and is the pathology centre for co-ordination of Clinical Trials and Contract Testing
