Position Title: Electrician 

 

Reports To: Director of Maintenance and Custodial Services

 

Work Days/Year: Full-time, Monday through Friday, 12-month

 

Union Affiliation: HPS Custodial/Maintenance MEA/NEA

 

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

 

Hourly Wage: $32.05

 

SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Director of Maintenance and Custodial Services, the Electrician will perform skilled electrical work across district facilities, including installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical systems. This position also performs preventative maintenance on electrical components according to national and state electrical and fire codes. This role ensures safe, efficient electrical operations while supporting school operations and capital improvement projects.  

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  

  • Assemble, install, test, and maintain electrical or electronic wiring, equipment, appliances, apparatus, and fixtures, using hand tools and power tools.
  • Diagnose malfunctioning systems, apparatus, and components, using test equipment and hand tools, to locate the cause of a breakdown and correct the problem.
  • Connect wires to circuit breakers, transformers, or other components.
  • Inspect electrical systems, equipment, and components to identify hazards, defects, and the need for adjustment or repair, and to ensure compliance with codes.
  • Advise management on whether continued operation of equipment could be hazardous.
  • Test electrical systems and continuity of circuits in electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures, using testing devices such as ohmmeters, voltmeters, and oscilloscopes, to ensure compatibility and safety of the system.
  • Maintain current electrician's license or identification card to meet governmental regulations.
  • Plan layout and installation of electrical wiring, equipment and fixtures, based on job specifications and local codes.
  • Support other staff regarding installation, maintenance, or repair of electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures.
  • Prepare sketches or follow blueprints to determine the location of wiring and equipment and to ensure conformance to building and safety codes.
  • Use a variety of tools and equipment such as power construction equipment, measuring devices, power tools, and testing equipment including oscilloscopes, ammeters, and test lamps.
  • Install ground leads and connect power cables to equipment, such as motors.
  • Perform administrative duties such as maintaining records and files, preparing reports and ordering supplies and equipment.
  • Repair or replace wiring, equipment, and fixtures, using hand tools and power tools.
  • Work from ladders, scaffolds, and roofs to install, maintain or repair electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures.
  • Place conduit (pipes or tubing) inside designated partitions, walls, or other concealed areas, and pull insulated wires or cables through the conduit to complete circuits between boxes.
  • Construct and fabricate parts, using hand tools and specifications.
  • Fasten small metal or plastic boxes to walls to house electrical switches or outlets.
  • Perform physically demanding tasks, such as digging trenches to lay conduit and moving and lifting heavy objects.
  • Provide preliminary sketches and cost estimates for materials and services.
  • Provide assistance during emergencies by operating floodlights and generators, placing flares, and driving needed vehicles.
  • Drives to different district facilities to perform work as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Regular attendance.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to read documents such as safety rules, instructions and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence such as work orders, e-mails, schedules and memos.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. 
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to interpret miscellaneous drawings and schematics.

REASONING ABILITY:

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. 
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent. 
  • Valid Michigan Driver’s License required.
  • Electrical Journeyman License and two years of experience as a journeyman required.
  • Master Electrician License and five years of experience preferred.
  • OSHA High Voltage Certificate or equivalent required.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

  • Must satisfy any applicable local/state electrical certification and licensing prerequisites.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge and ability to operate and maintain a large range of tools, vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with district staff and the public.
  • Ability to assume responsibility, display initiative, and exercise good judgment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works outdoors, standing, walking and using hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools or controls. The employee frequently reaches with hands and arms. The employee occasionally sits. The employee frequently squats, stoops or kneels and reaches about the head and reaches forward. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp tools and climb on ladders.  The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this job. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.  Occasionally the employee will lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The employee will sometimes push and/or pull items. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust focus.

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderately loud.
