ACCOUNTING TECHNICIAN I-UTILITY COLLECTIONS
The City of Staunton, located in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley, is seeking highly qualified applicants for an Accounting Technician I-Utility Collections position. The successful candidate performs clerical and technical work involving the collection and processing of utility payments. Additional support services is provided including the processing of returned mailed, mail distribution and serving as back to other positions as needed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:
The minimum performance expectations include, but are not limited to, the following functions/tasks:
- Provides exemplary customer service;
- Provides exemplary customer service;
- Collects and processes payments for utility billings: water/sewer/refuse/stormwater and parking;
- Processes other payments as assigned;
- Reconciles cash drawer daily and makes deposits with Treasurer’s office;
- Assists utility customers with questions about utility accounts;
- Researches misapplied payments and requests transfer;
- Reprints utility bills upon request;
- Reconciles utility accounts receivables, customer deposits, and undistributed receipts;
- Assists with collections and questions on delinquent accounts;
- Processes returned payments and follow up with a letter to the customer;
- Processes returned mail, update addresses;
- Distributes city wide mail and collects payments from drop box;
- Serves as a backup to other key areas in the Finance office;
- Assists independent auditors as required on City audits;
- Identifies incomplete or inaccurate documents;
- Collects information and compiles data for special and periodic reports and;
- Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Must have a thorough knowledge of accounting terminology and methods. Must have knowledge of computer applications including Word, Excel and/or other financial software. Must have general knowledge of: accounting principles, all phases of accounts payable and accounts receivable including laws, regulations and benefits, and standard office procedures, practices and equipment. Must have the ability to: maintain accurate financial records, prepare reports and statements, establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public, understand and follow oral and written directions, establish and follow detailed work procedures, post accounts and perform mathematical computations with speed and accuracy.
QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Associates degree in accounting, business administration or related field or equivalent amount of training and experience required.
Starting Salary: $41,815
Grade 7
FLSA: Non-Exempt
