Essential Job Functions
- Ensuring maximum regulatory compliance aligned with the Destination Zero initiative.
- Providing comprehensive oversight of operational safety and environmental matters across vessels, fleets, and facilities.
- Offering an additional layer of review during routine audits, surveys, and inspections to prevent narrow focus.
- Enhancing management engagement with field operations to promote safe practices and environmental compliance.
- Facilitating the identification and sharing of safety and environmental best practices across the organization.
- Conducting regular audits and inspections, and driving continuous improvement of safety policies, programs, and procedures.
- Supporting the training department to ensure timely completion of monthly training, drills, and certifications.
- Assisting the claims and risk department with incident reporting and claims management, including call-outs.
- Leading and participating in incident investigations and ensuring corrective actions are implemented.
- Maintain Fleet (assist as needed if available)
Additional Job Expectations
- Ability to perform deckhand operations on vessels as directed
- Ability to operate forklift and/or crane as deemed necessary
Key Responsibilities
Safety, Environmental Compliance & Auditing
- Develop, implement, and maintain health, safety, and environmental policies in compliance with company and regulatory standards.
- Conduct monthly safety inspections of all vessels and facilities, including unannounced walkthroughs to engage personnel and identify concerns.
- Lead semi-annual OSHA compliance audits and bi-annual internal facility audits, providing feedback to management.
- Participate in annual USCG vessel inspections.
- Audit crew participation in safety initiatives such as meetings, emergency drills, and near-miss reporting.
- Monitor adherence to confined space entry protocols, including equipment maintenance and on-site verification.
- Stay current on regulatory changes and coordinate SWPPP assessments and reporting.
- Oversee permit sampling and flow recordkeeping, ensuring proper chemical inventory and compliance.
- Submit monthly DMRs and flow data to state environmental agencies, maintaining both electronic and physical records.
Incident & Claims Management
- Manage workplace incident investigations, including response, root cause analysis, and prevention planning.
- Handle initial emergency claims procedures and ensure proper documentation and follow-up.
Training & Development
- Track and coordinate OSHA-required training.
- Deliver safety and environmental training as needed.
- Evaluate training effectiveness through crew interviews and field observations.
- Recommend improvements to training programs based on field feedback.
Emergency Response
- Assist in emergency situations and provide handling guidance as needed.
- Provide medical management for injured employees
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Preferred: Minimum 2 years of experience working on push boat in the Mississippi River and US Inland Waterways
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- High School Diploma or GED.
SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
- Proficient in reading and writing. Ability to complete required paperwork without assistance.
- General understanding of computer programs (MS Office Suite, email).
- Possess effective communication skills to interact with personnel at all levels
- Be physically fit to perform all essential physical demands of this job safely
- Ability to work in a team-oriented environment
- Ability to work extended hours and to be on-call as directed
CERTIFICATIONS/ LICENSING
- Must possess and maintain a valid TWIC
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Selected candidate must pass a pre-employment drug screen and background investigation to be hired for the position.
