About the Department

Looking for a rewarding career growth opportunity that provides on-the-job training? The full-time Craftsworker position on the Water team of the Water, Sewer, and Drains division performs technical labor, operating specialized equipment to help maintain and repair the water, sewer, and drains system, handwork relating to current projects, snow and ice treatment and removal, and preparing routine records and reports.

Work Schedule: Monday – Thursday, 6:30am – 3:30pm; Friday, 6:30am – 12:30pm (40 hours/week)

Position Duties

These duties are a general summary and not all inclusive:

  • Performs skilled and semi-skilled craft work, including construction, maintenance, and repairs to utilities infrastructure related to water and wastewater systems; cleans and inspects water lines; fixes pipes and lays access hole covers; runs rollers and compactors; excavates and fills trenches; spreads concrete and asphalt mix; installs and inspects water meters; repairs and maintains water hydrants.  
  • Operates a variety of motor driven vehicles and equipment including front end loader, backhoe, excavator, etc.; uses a variety of power-driven and hand tools to perform assigned tasks; ensures that all safety precautions are followed while carrying out various public works-related projects.
  • Prepares routine records, logs, and reports; responds to routine inquiries, requests, and complaints from the public or contractors; may assist outside contractors engaged in construction and repair activities.
  • Mandatory participation in the Snow & Ice Program; may include road treatment, plowing, snow hauling, etc.; provides backup support and assistance for other DPW projects as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

To be considered for the position, applicants must have at least:

  • Valid MA Driver’s License
  • CDL Class A or B
  • One (1) to three (3) years of directly relevant experience.
  • High school, plus elementary technical training, acquired on the job or through one year or less of technical or business school.
  • Ability to work with a team or independently.
  • Demonstrated communication and customer service skills with members of the public.

Preferred Qualifications or the Ability to Obtain the Following:

  • OSHA 10 Hour Training required at time of hire or the ability to obtain within 1 year of employment.
  • Hoisting License 2A, 1C, 4E, 4G
  • Grade D1 or T1 Water license
  • Water meter knowledge and experience strongly preferred

Other Qualifications

Pre-Hire Process:

For positions requiring a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), including a CDL permit, the Town of Needham conducts pre-employment physicals and drug testing and post-employment random drug and alcohol testing in accordance with U.S. DOT Regulations.
