Applicants must be at least 20 years of age:   Associate Degree in Early Education / Child Development with a minimum of 1080 hours of experience in a school age setting and 12 Early Childhood Education or Child Development college credits.   $17.35 

 

Bachelor's Degree with 12 credits in Elementary Education, Recreation, Group Social work, Child Studies, or related field with a minimum of 540 hours of experience in a school age setting and receives program approval from the Board of Governors of Higher Education. Head Teacher Certificate. $17.85

 

Bachelors degree 4 years degree in Early Childhood Education or Child Development Education with a minimum of 540 hours in a school age setting. $18.85

 

Must have or be able to obtain a School Age Head Teacher Certificate from the OEC Registry.   

 

Job Description


HEAD TEACHER, CYS

 

REPORTS TO: Director

 

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: 

To provide a warm, nurturing, safe, child-centered environment in which children's self-concepts are enhanced, independence encouraged, and individuality respected.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Degree in Elementary Education, Early Childhood or Child Development or Degree in another field plus at least 12 credits in Early Childhood or Child Development. 
  • Minimum of two years of supervised experience working with children.
  • Have and maintain a current CPR/First Aid Certificate and Medication Administration Training, and Epi Pen Certification, which meets State of Connecticut Licensing requirements. 
  • Fingerprints, TB test and Health Assessment at time of employment.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Know, understand and implement developmentally appropriate principles through planning daily activities that meet the emotional, physical, intellectual and social needs of both the individual and the group.  Activities must include SEL, STEAM, literacy, multicultural, and service learning.
  • Supervise and train staff to provide them with the opportunity to have input in the planning and implementation of the program, as well as provide orientation for new staff on site.
  • Complete all monthly site paperwork required to in compliance with program policies and state agencies.
  • Participate in staff development activities and workshops.  Hold regular, scheduled planning/training meetings with own staff as required by the Director. 
  • Responsible for the accurate implementation and completion of required programming and documentation (i.e., Kindertales- Behavior, sign ins and outs, etc.)
  • Adhere to all policies and procedures in CYS Staff Handbook.

 

Children:

  • Ensure the safety and security of all children which includes tracking absent students.
  • Maintain visual supervision at all times.
  • Use appropriate and positive discipline and work with staff so that discipline is consistent and follows program guidelines.
  • Be alert to the social, emotional, physical and mental needs of the children.  Observe children's health, behavior, development and activities, both individual and group, and provide documentation. 
  • Immediately report any suspected incident of child abuse or neglect to the Director.  Know and follow protocols for reporting to the DCF hotline.

 

Parents: 

  • Develop friendly and professional rapport with parents and communicate in a prompt manner.
  • Inform parents of program/agency goals, developments, and issues.
  • Attend all parent meetings and conferences as required.
  • Inform and provide parents of accidents, incidents, and ouch reports in a timely manner.

 

Administrative:

  • Know and implement all State/WHCH regulations regarding the program and ensure their implementations.  Ensure that all staff and children's profiles meet all State/WHCH regulations at all times.
  • Maintain professional qualifications/certifications such as OEC Registry and BCIS Registry.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records of children.  Ensure that students are signed in upon arrival  and/or signed out upon departure.
  • Fill out Accident/Incident/Ouch reports immediately so parents are aware of the incident as soon as possible.  Ensure that they are signed by parents.
  • Document practiced fire drills, lockdowns, and other emergency procedures monthly.
  • Promptly inform the Child Care Director/WHCH of any emergency situation, or unusual incidents or accidents, before consulting with counseling sources (i.e. - teacher, etc.).
  • Complete and submit all monthly paperwork: checklist, activity, newsletter, supply sheets forms in a timely manner.  Pick up and bring supplies and materials from WHCH to child care site.
  • Maintain good relationships with school personnel.

                                    

Classroom/Play yard Environments:

  • Conduct an orientation for all children on classroom and play yard rules.
  • Orient and supervise assistants, interns, and volunteers regarding the classroom and play yard materials, equipment, and rules.
  • Create and maintain nurturing and positive environments that provide choices and variety that are appropriate to children's developmental potential and promote children’s self-esteem.
  • Create displays of children's art and work; bulletin boards are up-to-date and frequently changed.
  • Provide for care and proper use of rooms, furniture, equipment, and materials 
  • Keep site clean and orderly, working with children to help them learn appropriate behaviors.
  • Report and remove (when possible) potential hazards.
