About the Department
The Glendora Public Works Department is excited to announce openings for Leadworker positions in both our Facilities and Streets Divisions. We are seeking knowledgeable, positive, and team-oriented professionals to help guide daily operations and support division crews. The ideal candidates will bring hands-on experience in maintaining safe and compliant work environments, along with strong leadership and organizational skills to effectively mentor and engage staff.
These positions play a key role in ensuring the success of their respective divisions by coordinating projects, teaching best practices, and overseeing a wide variety of maintenance tasks and procedures. Experience with work order management systems and technology tools for tracking requests from staff and the public is highly desirable.
Position Duties
Duties will vary depending on the division. Streets assignments may include asphalt and concrete repairs, painting, and sign installation. Facilities assignments may include preventative and general building maintenance across City facilities, including the use of power tools, familiarity with plumbing, electrical, HVAC, drywall repair, and related skills.
Some of the typical duties of the Public Works Maintenance Leadworker include but are not limited to, the following:
Participates and leads the work of the traffic crew engaged in installing and
maintaining street signs and maintaining street markings; lays out traffic striping and legends prior to painting; prepares a variety of reports; uses a variety of equipment and tools such as welders, paint striper, and airless painter; sets up traffic control and safety zones.
Participates and leads the work of crews engaged in the painting of streets, crosswalks, safety zones, curbs and parking stalls; the maintenance, replacement, and repair of street signs and traffic signs.
Participates and leads the work of a crew engaged in the removal of graffiti
Including sandblasting chemically cleaning and painting surfaces; uses a variety of equipment and tools such as sandblaster, airless pump machine, rollers, trucks, etc.; maintains a variety of records related to graffiti removal.
Participates and leads the work of a park maintenance crew in operating power and hand tools, edging, and weeding lawns, flower beds, and other landscaped areas; cutting and planting sod; spreading seed and fertilizer; planting or removing flowers and trees; pruning and trimming trees, operating, maintaining, repairing and/or installing in-ground sprinkler systems; cleaning walks, parking areas, and other areas of leaves and other debris; removing trash; operating power mowers, blowers, sweepers, edger’s, hedge trimmers, clippers, sprayers, and other equipment or vehicles; cleaning and repairing restrooms and park equipment; making minor repairs to equipment.
Participates and leads the work of the street maintenance crew engaged in repairing and replacing concrete sidewalks, curbs, gutters and other concrete structures; repairing and maintaining city streets and alleys by patching with hot or cold asphalt mix; operates a variety of equipment and uses a variety tools such as rollers, dump trucks, jackhammers, air compressors, tractors; sets up traffic control and safety zones.
Operates light and heavy equipment; performs routine maintenance and repair on equipment and/or arranges for vehicle and equipment repairs.
Makes specific work assignments to crew members and prepares performance
evaluations; conducts preliminary disciplinary actions; prepares and submits records and reports concerning materials and equipment used; orders materials and supplies; obtains estimates and submits requisitions.
Ensures work of crew is performed in a safe and efficient manner; trains
subordinates in semi-skilled and skilled operations, work methods, and safety
practices and procedures; acts as supervisor in his/her absence.
Answers emergency calls from the public and other agencies taking appropriate action such as placing barricades, removing fallen trees and limbs, removing trash or foreign objects from roadways, replacing street signs and emergency patching of streets or flood control facilities.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and/or Experience
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Graduation from high school or equivalent and two years of increasingly responsible experience in public works maintenance and repair work, and public works technology programs, or two years of experience performing duties comparable to a Senior Maintenance Worker in the City of Glendora.
Knowledge and Skill Levels
Considerable knowledge of equipment operation, techniques, and methods used in the construction and maintenance of water distribution and production, meter replacement, streets, sidewalks, signs, and storm drains, graffiti removal; the methods, materials, and equipment used in the construction, maintenance, and repair of parks and facilities; testing procedures of backflow devices; grounds maintenance methods and techniques; lead supervision and training techniques; safe work practices; uses and purposes of general construction tools and equipment; traffic laws, ordinances and rules involved in truck and heavy equipment operation; standards relating to the installation, location and required maintenance of traffic signs and pavement markings; use and proper application of herbicides and pesticides. Skill in operating equipment used in work performed, including concrete saw, grinder, jackhammer, loader, dump truck, forklift, backhoe, and cutting torch. General skill in the operation of computers.
Special Requirements
Possession of or ability to obtain a Class C California driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record.
Possession of or ability to obtain a Class B California driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record, may be required for some assignments.
For Park Division assignments, possession or ability to obtain a valid Pest Control Applicator License within one year of appointment.
