As a Senior Staff Safety Engineer, Product Safety & Homologation, you will play a critical role in ensuring our autonomous trucking products meet the highest standards of safety and regulatory compliance.

This senior individual contributor role combines deep technical expertise, regulatory fluency, and cross-functional influence. You’ll partner across engineering, operations, legal, and government relations teams, while also engaging directly with regulators, standards bodies, and industry coalitions. Your work will help shape the future of autonomous vehicle safety and ensure that Aurora’s systems are designed, built, and deployed in compliance with evolving global standards.

In this role, you will:

  • Monitor, interpret, and anticipate changes in FMCSA, NHTSA, UNECE, SAE, ISO, and other regulatory frameworks to inform design and deployment decisions
  • Own compliance programs end-to-end: from requirement and policy development, traceability, and verification through to audit readiness and third-party certification
  • Conduct and support audits and investigations, both internal and external, ensuring robust corrective actions and continuous improvement
  • Develop and maintain compliance reporting and archival systems, establishing a single source of truth for regulatory evidence
  • Partner cross-functionally with engineering, operations, legal, government relations, and OEM partners to embed safety and compliance into product lifecycle and deployment strategy
  • Act as Aurora’s subject-matter expert and external representative with regulators, industry coalitions, and standards bodies, shaping the future of AV safety standards

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Science, or related technical field
  • 10+ years in compliance, regulatory, or systems engineering roles
  • Expert knowledge of automotive and autonomous vehicle regulatory codes and standards
  • Direct experience with homologation, type approval, or certification of light-duty or commercial/heavy-duty vehicles
  • Proven experience with non-functional requirements, root-cause analysis, and corrective action planning
  • Exceptional communication skills; able to convey complex regulatory concepts to engineers, legal counsel, executives, and external stakeholders
  • Proven ability to influence cross-functional stakeholders and represent the company externally with regulators, standards bodies, or industry coalitions

Desirable Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in a relevant technical or regulatory discipline
  • Strong systems engineering skills, including requirements management, safety materials development, and compliance traceability
  • Direct experience with Autonomous Vehicle (AV) or Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) compliance, standards, or certification.
  • Familiarity with the safety challenges of machine learning (ML) based systems
  • Exposure to international homologation and type approval processes (e.g. UNECE frameworks)
