THE POSITION
You will be Fast Forward’s first dedicated People leader, with the opportunity to build the People function from the ground up and make a lasting impact on our team and culture. This is a high-impact role where you will oversee the entire employee lifecycle, design the systems, policies, and practices that support a positive company culture, strengthen staff and leadership, and shape the organization for years to come. This is a unique opportunity to bring your People leadership skills to an organization accelerating tech solutions for social good.
As Director of People, you will be both a strategic partner and a hands-on operator. You will work closely with Fast Forward’s leadership team to align people strategy with organizational goals, while also leading the day-to-day practices that keep our staff supported and engaged. You will partner closely with the Head of Recruiting to ensure alignment across the employee lifecycle.
This position is based in San Francisco, CA; it is a full-time, in-office role.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
People Operations & Compliance
- Own the full employee lifecycle, including onboarding, offboarding, career growth, retention, policies & procedures, and employee relations.
- Oversee payroll, benefits, compensation, and HR systems (currently managed in Gusto), ensuring practices are equitable.
- Partner with the leadership team on compensation decisions.
- Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and implement required training.
- Ensure accurate and compliant record-keeping and documentation.
- Serve as a resource to managers on employee relations issues, providing support and guidance to promote fair and consistent management practices.
People Strategy & Culture
- Develop and execute a people-centric strategy to align with organizational goals and foster a culture that reflects Fast Forward’s values.
- Champion diversity, equity, and inclusion at every stage of the employee lifecycle - from prioritizing diversity in recruiting practices to fostering an equitable and inclusive culture where all talent can thrive.
- Partner with the executive team to identify talent gaps and develop effective organizational design.
- Partner with Office Manager to design and implement initiatives that strengthen employee engagement, belonging, and recognition.
Performance & Leadership Development
- Lead performance management cycles, ensuring clarity in expectations, goal-setting, and feedback.
- Sustain career development frameworks that give staff clarity and growth opportunities.
- Provide coaching and guidance to strengthen management and staff capability.
Portfolio Support and Training
- Provide guidance to tech nonprofits in Fast Forward’s portfolio around People Ops, HR strategy, and talent development.
- Assist our portfolio in scaling talent and organizational design.
- Create content to educate tech nonprofits on best practices in HR and People Ops.
WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR
- 8+ years of HR/People Ops leadership experience, with proven success owning the People function.
- Enthusiastic about Fast Forward’s mission and the power of tech for good.
- Proven track record of building and scaling people systems and policies that balance organizational compliance with culture.
- Strong leadership and coaching skills, with the ability to support and develop managers and partner effectively with senior leaders.
- Experience owning payroll, benefits, compensation, and employee relations.
- Track record of fostering equity-centered, inclusive cultures that promote engagement and belonging.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to navigate sensitive conversations and build trust across all levels of an organization.
- Strategic thinker who can design long-term people strategies while also thriving in hands-on execution.

COMPENSATION
Salary: $130,000 - $145,000- negotiable depending on experience.
Note: In accordance with federal, state, and local safety guidelines, this role is expected to be performed in-person, in San Francisco.
