We are looking for a Chief Medical Officer to join our leadership team providing team based care delivered in a kind and compassionate manner.
The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) serves as the senior clinical leader of the health center, responsible for ensuring high-quality, patient-centered care to diverse and underserved communities. The CMO provides strategic leadership of all clinical services, supervises clinical directors, supports and advocates for clinicians, and ensures that clinical operations advance the mission and compliance requirements of a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC). This role partners with the CEO and executive team to align medical practice with organizational strategy, HRSA and Joint Commission standards, payer programs, and community health needs.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Clinical Leadership & Patient Care
1. Provide clinical oversight to ensure access to comprehensive, culturally competent, patient-centered care across all sites and service lines.
2. Maintain a limited patient care panel to remain connected to frontline challenges and community needs where fifty percent (50%) of the responsibilities include direct patient care. The balance of clinical and administrative responsibilities may be adjusted based on health center needs.
3. Champion evidence-based practices and innovations in primary care, behavioral health integration, chronic disease management, and care for special populations.
Quality & Performance Improvement
1. In collaboration with the Chief of Quality and Transformation, drive the organization’s quality improvement program, ensuring compliance with HRSA requirements, UDS measures, NCQA, PCMH recognition, Joint Commission standards, and payer-driven value-based care programs.
2. In collaboration with the Chief of Quality and Transformation, support quality data monitoring, reporting, and improvement plans to optimize patient outcomes and reduce health disparities.
3. In collaboration with the Quality Department and Compliance and Risk Management Departments, ensure effective infection control, risk management, and patient safety practices across all sites.
Supervision & Development of Clinical Leaders
1. Directly supervise clinical directors and other clinical leaders, providing mentorship, accountability, and support.
2. Lead recruitment, credentialing, privileging, and ongoing competency evaluations of physicians and advanced practice clinicians.
3. Foster a culture of teamwork, collaboration, accountability, and professional development among all clinical staff.
Clinical Operations & Integration
1. Collaborate with the Chief Operating Officer and site leadership to ensure efficient, integrated workflows and effective use of the electronic health record (EHR).
2. Develop and implement clinical policies, procedures, and protocols consistent with FQHC regulations and standards of care.
3. Support the integration of medical, dental, behavioral health, pharmacy, and enabling services into a coordinated care model.
Clinician Advocacy & Engagement
1. Serve as the primary advocate for clinicians, promoting well-being, retention, and professional satisfaction.
2. Facilitate open communication between clinicians and administration to ensure alignment of clinical practice and organizational priorities.
3. Champion initiatives that reduce burnout and enhance provider-patient relationships.
Strategic Leadership & Community Engagement
1. Contribute to organizational strategic planning and ensure clinical input into service expansion, partnerships, and financial planning.
2. Represent the health center with HRSA, state and local health departments, payers, community partners, and advocacy organizations as the clinical voice of the organization.
3. Advance health equity and address social determinants of health through strategic program development and partnerships.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION: Physician with Primary Care Training Board Certified in Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, or Obstetrics. A Master’s degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Medical Management, or other health related fields.
EXPERIENCE: Minimum ten (10) years’ clinical practice experience and a minimum of five (5) years’ experience as a Medical Director or CMO. Prior experience for increasing access to and quality of community-based medical services for Medicare/Medicaid-eligible populations. Exceptional interpersonal and leadership skills, knowledge and understanding of healthcare management/operations and finance, experience with physician recruitment, resource management, credentialing, and quality and performance/process improvement. Familiarity with tele-medicine and prior experience a plus
