About the Department
The purpose of this position is to maintain the upkeep and cleanliness of Wilmington Police Department for staff, visitors and/or tenants. This position will also lock and unlock buildings, purchase supplies, move furniture, run errands, and assist with special events. May be assigned other related duties.
Position Duties
- Cleans floors and stairs located in entryways, hallways, offices, and outside walkways, sweeps, vacuums, dusts, mops, buffs, shampoos carpet, spot clean, strip and waxes floors, and assists with pressure washing.
- Cleans restrooms by sanitizing and disinfecting walls, doors, door hardware, lockers, toilets, urinals, showers, floors, sinks, mirrors, and replenishing supplies such as toilet paper, paper towels, soap, and hand sanitizer.
- Clean and disinfect a variety of surfaces in elevators, kitchens, break rooms, offices and hallways including doors, windows, sills, HVAC air vent covers, and other surfaces.
- Cleans furniture, tabletops, chairs, and office equipment including dusting computers, fire sprinklers, desks, blinds, and cubicles.
- Disposes of trash and cleans trash cans as needed.
- Set up chairs and tables for meetings.
- Blows off sidewalks around buildings, patios, doors, and drains.
- Maintains cleaning supplies, stocks, and delivers supplies, and notifies supervisor of reordering needs.
- Notifies supervisor concerning repair needs.
- Maintains and keeps cleaning tools and machines in a safe, operable condition.
- Performs work during emergency/disaster situations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
**The employees are subject to working in both inside and outside environments and exposure to various hazards such as chemicals and human body fluids, and thus are subject to OSHA requirements on bloodborne pathogens. As well as being called back in after hours and reporting for inclement weather.**
Minimum Qualifications
Formal Education
- Work requires the ability to read and understand written instructions, understand simple processes, and operate machines routinely. The level of knowledge is equivalent to less than high school or equivalency.
- One year of relevant experience. Relevant experience may include examples such as:
- Professional janitorial, custodial, or housekeeping work in settings like schools, offices, hospitals, or public buildings
- Experience using floor care equipment such as buffers or carpet cleaners
- Valid Class C Driver’s License

Other Qualifications
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Exerting 20-50 lbs. occasionally, 10-25 lbs. frequently, or up to 10 lbs. constantly.
WORKING CONDITIONS: This position has a varied work location. Physical demands include continuous standing, walking, pushing/pulling, bending and frequently performs lifting/carrying, reaching/handling, kneeling/crouching, twisting, balancing and talking.
