GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
The parks and recreation laborer is responsible for the upkeep and enhancement of the county parks and grounds. This hands-on role includes operating a range of tools and equipment for grass cutting, landscaping, and tree care. This position also involves general maintenance duties, such as cleaning restrooms, clearing drainage, and assisting with building repairs like plumbing, carpentry, and painting. Other key responsibilities include maintaining ball fields, assembling park equipment, and operating county vehicles. The job requires physical stamina to perform manual labor in various weather conditions and environments.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Operates and maintains grass cutting mowers, edgers, trimmers, pruners, blowers, chain saws, pressure washers and other hand and power tools used in parks maintenance.
- Landscapes county property, lays sod and spreads mulch, irrigates parks and County grounds, rakes and gathers trash from assigned areas, applies fertilizers and pesticides as needed under direction of a certified pesticide applicator, prunes trees and shrubs according to Best Management Practices.
- Performs clean-up tasks such as emptying trash cans, cleaning county bathrooms and park sidewalks, controlling weeds and clearing obstructions to park drainage ditches.
- Assists skilled trade workers in the maintenance and repair of buildings such as plumbing, carpentry and painting.
- Lay and repair irrigation lines, assist in the maintenance of fences, shelters, playground equipment and other ancillary equipment as needed in parks and playgrounds.
- Operation and general maintenance of County vehicles and equipment.
- Maintains ball fields by repairing fences, edging and mowing grass, dragging and raking clay infields, fertilizing and applying insect controls.
- Repairs, assembles and installs picnic tables, grills, playgrounds trash can holders, and signs.
ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Performs other duties as required.
Requirements
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
- High school diploma or GED equivalent, with experience in maintaining facilities; or equivalent experience or knowledge in areas such as landscaping, and/or general maintenance.
- Must possess and maintain a valid South Carolina Driver’s license.
- Must pass drug screening test prior to employment and submit to random drug tests as per Laurens County policies and procedures.
