Organizational Summary
Research & Innovation (R&I) is a vice presidential area charged with system-wide administration of the USF Research Enterprise, which generates over $730 Million in sponsored contracts and grants annually and supports a USF Research Park with a business incubator. R&I, and provides guidance and oversight to seven divisions/units at multiple campuses and locations in order to ensure the appropriate investment of University resources in the Research Enterprise and compliance with federal regulations.
Position Summary
The position is responsible for developing, managing, and documenting USF Research & Innovation's Portal, databases, applications, and intranet. This position serves as the lead application engineer on complex software development assignments including automations and integrations; typically for the entire life cycle of an application which includes analysis, coding, testing, and documentation. The position requires significant professional experience in application programming, system integration, database design, and application modification and maintenance. The Senior Application Developer serves as a subject matter expert on software, security, and application administration in a complex enterprise computing environment, they also serve as an integral part of a streamlined Applications Development Team in USF Research Information Services unit. The team includes an in-unit Associate Director/Senior Application Developer with 25+ years of application engineering work, an in-unit Web Developer and an additional Application Developer I position assigned to the Research Integrity and Compliance team.
Responsibilities
The responsibilities for this position include:
- Analyze business requirements and data needs. Develop and maintain reliable, relational, and scalable database systems. Use industry standard programming software languages and frameworks to create innovative, efficient, and cost-saving solutions to USF Research business processes. Establish guidelines and procedures that comply with University, State and Federal standards, regulations, and policies as well as Protected Health Information, and mitigate risk.
- Lead needs assessment and solution development for customers. Design, implement, and support software applications and integrated database solutions. This includes the research, design, and development of solutions that interface with USF Enterprise systems and technologies. Execute the detailed application design of larger and/or more complex internal projects collaborating with stakeholders, service owners, and partners.
- Configure application appearances, styles, and branding using industry standard interface deployment and configuration tools. Maintain the organized modularization of interface elements that enable rapid and adaptable implementation. Design and maintain application interface guidelines for technical projects. Create user and technical support documentation to assist with system use and support.
- Application and integration troubleshooting and problem solving across multiple platforms (production/QA/test/development). Provides technical/end-user support, liaising with stakeholders, external departments, and technical experts. Coordinates development, maintenance, and support of both the Research Operational Data Store databases and USF Enterprise databases (Oracle, Azure Lakehouse).
- Evaluate and research emerging technologies and processes and their application to USF Research Systems, Databases, Security Methods and User Interfaces. Consistently assess current industry standards which allow for scalable system solutions for future initiatives and functionality.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, MIS or other field involving software and analytical training, and four years of IT related work experience, OR a Bachelor's degree with no specific required field and five years of IT related work experience, OR a Master's degree and three years of IT related work experience, OR a combination of eight years of IT related work experience and validated training. Preparation for a relevant IT certification is considered to be related training.
