Job Summary:

The Director of Pharmacy serves as the Supervising Pharmacist at St. James Hospital (SJH) for the institution and is responsible for overseeing daily department operations and the clinical review of drug therapy in the institution. The supervising pharmacist contributes to the development and implementation of policies and procedures to support and guide the Pharmacy Department. The supervising pharmacist must have both clinical and managerial skills. This individual is the NYS Supervising Pharmacist for the hospital pharmacy, and is legally responsible for assuring all operations adhere to NYS and Federal laws and regulations pertaining to pharmacy operations and institutional drug use practices.

Job Results & Essential Function


Patients get the Right Meds, the Right Dose at the Right Time


A.  Consults with, advises and acts as a general liaison between the hospital and medical staff on medication usage and application to ensure a multidisciplinary approach to improving patient care.

B.  Works within the limitations and requirements of State and Federal laws as well as SJH policies and procedures, and ensures the department staff also does.

C.  Enters and verifies medication orders using the appropriate formats and deals with any interaction or information flags that may occur.

D.  Documents clinical interventions and progress notes using the SJH computer system.

E.  Understands Pyxis functions, and is able to perform simple maintenance functions such as drawer recovery.

F.  Maintains controlled drug inventory and reports any discrepancy to the NYS Bureau of Narcotics and immediate supervisor as     needed. This includes being able to generate the necessary computer or Pyxis reports to solve discrepancies in the pharmacy or nursing units.

G.  Understands basic compounding functions. Also understands the basics of aseptic manipulation of sterile products. Is responsible to see that all extemporaneous manipulations are carried out properly. Oversees all interactions between St. James and all offsite suppliers of sterile compounded products.

H.  Understand the drug acquisition and inventory process and prepares reports required for billing, purchasing, accounts receivable, etc.

I. Oversees the process of ensuring medications orders are verified prior to medication delivery to the patient.

J. Oversees the storage and distribution of pharmaceuticals throughout the Hospital.

K.  In collaboration with others across the institution and health system, assures that Joint Commission and other regulatory standards related to medication management are met, and when deficiencies are identified assures that a plan of action is implemented to correct the issue(s) in a timely manner.


Patients Understand How to Properly Administer their Meds Post-Discharge

A.  As indicated, ensures patients receive the appropriate level of information necessary to properly administer their meds post discharge to avoid re-admission.

B.  As indicated, follows up with patients within a short time of discharge to ensure they clearly understand their meds and help address any access issues they may have.


Adequate & Secure Stock of Pharmaceuticals to Meet Patient Demand


A.  Determines the stock needed and works with pharmacy technicians to ensure stock is available as needed.

B.  Manages inventory system in EMR to monitor drug usage trends and uses this information to influence purchasing, identify opportunities for savings, and overall maximize value for SJH.

C.  Generates reports to monitor drug use system to ensure doses are prepared, dispensed and administered properly to provide a safe medication use system at SJH.


Team that Consistently Delivers

A.  Provides day-to-day direction to staff and coordinates workflow within the work unit; including distributing work, disseminating information, assigning staff to cover for absences, providing technical assistance, answering questions and resolving problems. Ensures work is scheduled effectively, and checkpoints and controls are set for monitoring.

B.  Ensures orientation, supervision and evaluation of clinical hospital staff as it relates to medication management. Ensures new hires are knowledgeable of policies, work rules, job responsibilities and other information necessary for successful performance.

C.  Assists with the establishment of standards of performance and maintains an evaluation system for personnel.

D.  Ensures an effective learning environment by coaching employees, orchestrating learning opportunities, and providing relevant, high-impact feedback. Establishes standards relative to learning and competencies for pharmacy staff in coordination with other UR Medicine affiliate departments of pharmacy.

E.  Provides employees with performance-related feedback, identifies performance deficiencies, and creates appropriate documentation.

F.  Addresses conflict within the team and facilitates an effective resolution.

G.  Coordinates all interactions with pharmacy staff of other URMC affiliate hospitals.

H.  Provides education concerning medications and medications use system functionality to other disciplines throughout the institution.


Budget Meets Annual Targets

A.  In concert with pharmacy leadership and SJH finance leadership, contributes to the preparation of the annual department budget.

B.  Manages budget performance and variance reporting for payroll, pharmaceuticals, and outside services that the pharmacy buys (e.g. drug information system, service agreements, leases, and other equipment.)

C.  Participates in Regional efforts to purchase and distribute required drugs at more effective pricing. Collaborates with UR Medicine Pharmaceutical Supply Chain leadership to optimize drug acquisition strategies.

Position Qualifications


Education & Experience

BS in Pharmacy or Pharm D degree is required. Additional education in hospital administration is preferred, as is five (5) years' experience in health systems pharmacy or in a supervisory capacity.


Licenses and/or Certifications

• NYS License and Registration in Pharmacy


Skills

•Is able to effectively communicate with nursing and physician staff, especially regarding clinical interventions.

•Must have the necessary computer skills to participate in the maintenance of the hospital computer system as it functions in the department.


Mental Demands

Must be able to remain calm and think clearly in stressful and emergency situations. Must be able to field a variety of questions from both the medical community and the public.


Physical Demands

•Approximately a 50/50 split between sitting for computer work and standing.

•Able to lift at least 20 pounds.


Interactions

Mostly with physicians and nursing, but also the ancillary departments as well. The greatest degree of interaction will be with other pharmacy department staff.


Working Conditions

Must be able to comply with SJH on-call requirements.
