The Gallery Programmer joins the Walters Cultural Arts Center team and leads education, programming, and exhibits for the Walters Cultural Arts Center Gallery, Hillsboro Art Walk gallery openings, and additional arts and culture events. Strong communication, time management, and computer skills are essential with an emphasis on exhibit production and preparation, project planning, and curatorial activities.

This position oversees gallery programming and educational offerings, artist calls and communications, logistical support for gallery programs, exhibit preparation, gallery intake, installation and de-installation, financial and administrative tracking, writing media releases and marketing materials, customer service, and more.

Hours generally take place during Walters Cultural Arts Center operating hours, Tuesday-Thursday from 10am – 9pm, Friday from 10am – 5pm, and Saturday from 9am-1pm, with some hours during evening gallery receptions and event programming.

General Statement of Duties

The principal function of an employee in this class is to plan, organize, and coordinate the implementation of gallery exhibits and lead related educational programming and community offerings. The work is performed under the supervision and direction of the Public Art Supervisor, but generous leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgement and initiative. This class performs lead worker duties over volunteers and interns.  This class is distinguished from the class of Recreation Instructor II by additional responsibility involved in Cultural Arts program planning, coordination, and education. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with the assigned supervisor, other City employees, program participants, volunteers, and the general public.  The principal duties of this class are performed in a cultural arts facility.  This is a non-exempt position.

Position Duties

  •  Plans, curates, and installs gallery exhibits.
  • Leads communications for visual artists for gallery exhibits and the annual Artisan Pop-up & Small Works show
  • Plans and coordinates gallery logistics, including scheduling and hosting artist coordination meetings, developing artwork inventories and scheduling load in and out times
  • Assembles and distributes meeting documents and reserves meeting times and spaces.
  • Creates and leads in providing educational information for exhibiting artists, for gallery docent volunteers, and for community programming and engagement.
  • Prepares exhibit contracts, labels, and exhibit statements and descriptions to guide community learning.
  • Coordinates gallery event logistics including Artwalk and special exhibit, educational programming
  • Assists internal and external customers for the gallery including artists and patrons interested in purchasing artwork.
  • Creates calls to artists, preparing, organizing, and reviewing artist submissions for consideration (for gallery exhibits), supports season curation in collaboration with Public Art Supervisor
  • Prepares gallery educational and marketing materials.
  • Maintains gallery supplies and equipment, including inventory and ordering.
  • Additionally, helps cover front desk breaks and opens and closes building occasionally. (This position is a back up to cover the front desk including opening and closing procedure when we are short staffed. Covering 15 – 30 minute break coverage is part of their regular assignment.  Longer front desk coverage including opening and closing the facility is occasionally as needed when short-staffed.)
  • Assists with facility set-ups of tables and chairs when needed. (Again, not part of weekly assignments.)
  • Instructs new employes, interns, and volunteers in how to perform certain tasks;
  • Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems;
  • Attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on principles, practices, and new developments in assigned work areas;
  • Responds to citizens’ questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner;
  • Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities;
  • Performs other directly related duties consistent with the role and function of the classification.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma, GED, AA, BA or BFA in Fine Arts, Arts Education, Museum and Gallery Practices, Art History, Art Administration, or related field; and 
  • Some previous work experience in a gallery or museum setting or a related field; or
  • Any combination of experience and training which provides the equivalent scope of knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.

Licensing/Certifications
•             Valid Driver’s License and safe driving record.

Bilingual incentive pay available
 Preference may be given to candidates who are bilingual in Spanish/English. Employees who can demonstrate the ability to speak Spanish, or any language spoken by over ten percent (10%) of City residents as documented by the most recent U.S. Census, at a proficiency level determined by a fluency test administered by the City, will receive a monthly premium of three percent (3%) of their regular base pay.
