About the Department

The Department of Parks, Recreation & Culture, Youth Services Division, is seeking enthusiastic individuals who enjoy working with young people to serve as part-time Senior Counselors for the 2025-2026 school year.

Youth Services Team members bring creativity, motivation, self-direction, and confidence in providing quality customer and program-related services to our community. Each individual plays a critical role in the success of the Youth Services Team and the ability to meet the needs and interests of Gaithersburg's diverse community. Based on their skill set and interests, Senior Counselors are placed into one of the City's out-of-school programs located at Gaithersburg school sites or other City facilities and parks to supervise and plan programs and activities for elementary, middle, and high school aged participants. We are looking for individuals who are responsible, dependable, and punctual; who can work independently and as part of a team; who can serve as a model for and promote responsible behavior; and who can create and contribute to a positive and enjoyable experience for all participants.

You must be at least 18 years of age and/or a high school graduate, be available to work weekdays (approximately 5 to 25 hours per week) during the school year, and must be able to attend all required staff training sessions prior to the beginning of programs. Possession of a valid non-provisional driver's license desirable. Starting hourly rate will be within the range and will be offered at a level consistent with the experience and qualifications of the candidate. Direct deposit of paychecks is a condition of employment for all City of Gaithersburg employees.

Position Duties

  • Plan, create, organize, and carry out appropriate program games and activities.
  • Ensure a positive, fun, and safe environment for participants.
  • Provide direct supervision of program participants
  • Assist with program setup and breakdown.
  • Perform event related tasks as assigned.
  • Perform general administrative support functions.
  • Provide outstanding service, pursue continuous improvement, and exceed expectations.

Minimum Qualifications

What you will need to be considered:
  • Be at least 18 years of age and/or a high school graduate or equivalent (GED).
  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills and leadership qualities.
  • The ability to make quick and sound decisions, enforce safety rules and regulations, and stay poised and diplomatic in all situations..
  • The ability to give, understand, follow, and carry out verbal instructions and directions.
  • The ability to deal with children, parents, and other staff in a positive, reassuring, courteous, and professional manner.
  • The physical ability to set-up and clean-up rooms for games and activities and to occasionally lift/carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to communicate fluently in English and Spanish or other language (desirable).
  • CPR/AED and First Aid certification (may be obtained through the City upon hire).
  • Or any acceptable equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to satisfactorily perform job duties and functions.
