Position Overview:
The Specialized Tree Equipment Operator is responsible for performing general labor and equipment operation duties to support tree care and vegetation management operations. This position requires the ability to carry out all responsibilities of the Groundperson classification, as well as safely operate specialized equipment, including a grapple truck and other designated machinery. The Operator plays a key role in ensuring job site safety, efficiency, and compliance with company and industry standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform all duties of the Groundperson classification, including but not limited to:
    • Operating a chainsaw for bucking and limbing.
    • Operating a wood chipper.
    • Conducting routine inspections and basic maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
    • Setting up job sites in compliance with safety protocols.
    • Assisting climbers or bucket operators from the ground.
    • Performing debris removal and site cleanup.
    • Establishing and maintaining temporary traffic control zones.
    • Acting as a spotter to ensure crew safety.
    • Completing post-work inspections and documentation.
    • Setting up rigging systems, ropes, and knots/hitches as required.
    • Participating in ongoing company training programs.
  • Safely operate specialized equipment, including grapple trucks and other designated machinery.
  • Ensure compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and company driving policies.
  • Demonstrate strong knowledge of safety protocols and emergency response procedures.
  • Collaborate effectively with team members to ensure efficiency and safety on the job site.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 21 years of age.
  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brakes endorsement.
  • Current DOT medical certificate.
  • Previous commercial driving experience with a clean driving record.
  • Documented experience operating specialized equipment.
  • CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Successful completion of the following company training programs:
  • Groundperson Training (completed and signed).
  • Tree Feller Training (completed and signed).
  • Line Clearance Competency Program (LCCP) test.
  • Groundperson section of the Line Clearance Qualification Program (LCQP) book.
  • Specialized equipment training (e.g., grapple truck).

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform manual labor outdoors for extended periods and in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move equipment and materials as required.
  • Capability to meet the physical demands associated with climbing, rigging, and ground support tasks.
