About the Department

This position is not designated as a safety/security sensitive position and is not subject to random drug and alcohol screening.

JOB OBJECTIVE:  To provide assistance to the Little Rock Marathon Manager in planning and execution for the annual Little Rock Marathon and related activities, events and projects, to include customer services relations, event and project management, as well as assisting in promotion and marketing of the Little Rock Marathon and related events/projects.

Position Duties

  1. Provides assistance to the Little Rock Marathon Manager in the planning and execution of all aspects of events of the annual Little Rock Marathon and related activities to include but not limited to solicitation of sponsorships, development of a comprehensive marketing strategy, volunteer recruitment and coordination, operations and course management, medical management, vendor relations, advertising, permit applications, scheduling emergency transportation, logistics, security. 
  2. Assists in developing policies and procedures for the operation of the Little Rock Marathon to include logistics, planning, travel, budgets, policies and promotions; implements upon  approval.
  3. Assists in assigning, prioritizing, and directing the work activities of assigned personnel to include full-time, part-time, temporary employees, contractors, and volunteers.
  4. Assists in reviewing costs, revenues and other data and implements changes as necessary; analyzes, determines requirements, and recommends funding for various activities and programs; assists in compiling information for development of the annual budget for the marathon related activities; monitors expenditures to ensure budgeted amounts are not exceeded and to ensure compliance with budgetary guidelines.
  5. Represents the City in the solicitation of funds for sponsorships for the Little Rock Marathon and related activities; works with civic, community, and business leaders to obtain funding and sponsorships to ensure adequate funds are available for marathon activities.
  6. Assists in promoting awareness and interest in the Little Rock Marathon and Department of Parks and Recreation in the state of Arkansas and the surrounding region by assisting with special activities to include, disseminates promotion and marketing information to on various social media platforms.
  7. Compiles information, prepares bid specifications, and contacts vendors to order merchandise and promotional items for the Little Rock Marathon and related activities.
  8. Posts information on the Little Rock Marathon website and social media platforms to inform the general public about Marathon events and activities.  
  9. Investigates and resolves operational and administrative problems or complaints related to Marathon activities and events; reports findings and solutions to Little Rock Marathon Manager and Director of Parks and Recreation.
  10. Assists in development and implementation of short and long range goals and action plans which support the Little Rock Marathon’s mission and long-range strategic business and marketing plans.
  11. Conducts research, analyzes data, and compiles monthly, quarterly, annual, and special narrative and statistical reports; researches materials for the preparation and implementation of special marathon-related activities.
  12. Attends Parks and Recreation meetings to answer questions and provide information regarding marathon events and activities; responds to citizen complaints relating to marathon activities; prepares and provides regular and special written reports regarding fundraising, marketing, public information, public relations, and related issues.
  13. Serves as liaison to various local and state municipalities and other agencies or organizations regarding marathon activities.
  14. Maintains an inventory of materials and supplies for Marathon activities and events; acquires materials list and ensures materials are available as needed; orders supplies, receives, unpacks, inspects, and ensures proper storage of all materials and supplies.
  15. Moves rocks, picks up sand bags, benches, etc. or other heavy items for the annual marathon and related activities and events; operates a forklift, man lift, articulating boom in the performance of assigned duties.
  16. Establishes and maintains hard copy and computer files and records relating Little Rock Marathon activities, events, and operations. 
  17. Operates a computer with database, desktop publishing, graphics, spreadsheet, and word processing software in the performance of essential job functions.
  18. Operates a City pool automobile in the performance of essential job functions.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Marathon Assistant, as well as part-time, temporary, contract employees, and volunteers.

Minimum Qualifications

These knowledge, skills, and abilities are usually, although not always, acquired through completion of a Bachelor's degree in Public Relations, Public Information, Marketing, Advertising, Business Administration, Public Administration, Journalism, Communications, or a related area; four (4) years of experience planning a large-scale event; two (2) years of experience in public relations, marketing, public information, fund raising, or a related area; two (2) years of experience in fundraising, grants administration, grants writing, or a related area; one (1) year of supervisory experience or related area.  Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:  

  • Must possess a valid Arkansas Class D (Non-Commercial Vehicle) Driver’s License before employment and maintain licensure for the duration of employment in this position. 

  • Must be available to work nights, weekends, and holidays.

  • Ability to provide assistance in the development of marketing and public information plans.
  • Ability to recruit, supervise and direct the activities of volunteers.
