What are Trust Fund Positions?
Trust Fund positions are unique to the Smithsonian. They are paid for from a variety of sources, including the Smithsonian endowment, revenue from our business activities, donations, grants and contracts. Trust employees are not part of the civil service, nor does trust fund employment lead to Federal status. The salary ranges for trust positions are generally the same as for federal positions and in many cases trust and federal employees work side by side. OVERVIEW

SERC is a unit of the Smithsonian Institution that is dedicated to ecological and environmental research, education and public engagement. The 2,650-acre campus includes forests, farmlands and wetlands, 15 miles of shoreline of Chesapeake Bay, and 10+ miles of walking trails. Located in Edgewater, Maryland, SERC is only 25 miles from Washington, D.C., and only 5 miles from Annapolis.

The SERC campus consists of an array of historic and modern buildings, including 7 LEED Platinum buildings, a large modern laboratory building, visitor cottages and intern dorms, a boat dock and other facilities for research and education. Staff include 140 employees. There are over 40 resident interns throughout the year and over 500 volunteers and citizen scientists who support diverse programs. A 40-person, centrally managed maintenance and security staff are on site. SERC receives over 15,000 visitors annually, including 6,000 school children on field trips. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Major Duties of this position are Human Resources and Administration Services.  
  • 80% - Serves as SERC Human Resources officer and chief liaison with the Smithsonian Office of Human Resources by performing human resources administration functions and analyses.
  • 20% - Provides support to SERC financial operations, including record keeping.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience: To qualify for this position, applicants must possess a bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from an accredited four-year college or university and/or 3-5 years of related experience (described below); or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience required for this position is as follows:
  • Exceptional interpersonal communication, people leadership, and project management skills
  • Strong skills with HR hiring and Applicant Tracking systems
  • Strong attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize work efficiently
  • Strong relationship-building, and follow-up skills
  • Ability to always maintain a high level of confidentiality
  • Ability to work with all levels of employees
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment and maintain strong attention to detail
  • Analytical mindset with a passion for problem-solving and process improvement
