About the Department
Expected Hours of Work
Hours are typically Monday-Friday from 8 am to 4:30 pm. In addition to working office hours, staff may be required to work additional events. Hours may include, nights, weekends, and holidays.
Position Duties
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals to perform these essential functions:
1. Conduct building, mechanical, and plumbing inspections on both new and existing structures.
2. Complete residential and commercial plan review.
3. Provide information and guidance to contractors and owners on code requirements and compliance procedures, including advising of code deficiencies, issuing notices of correction, and preparing reports on conditions.
4. Investigate miscellaneous building, mechanical, and plumbing permit complaints.
5. Collaborate on pre-construction and plan review processes.
6. Maintain daily inspection records and ensure fulfillment of required record-keeping procedures.
7. Stay abreast of industry trends, including development of new materials, equipment, construction methods, and code changes.

Supervisory Responsibility
This position does not have direct employee supervisory responsibilities. Though Inspectors may provide assistance to temporary/seasonal Inspectors.
Minimum Qualifications
• Two years of experience with plan review and inspections services.
• Current Minnesota Building Official Certification.
• Knowledge of municipal planning and zoning requirements and procedures.
• Knowledge of residential and commercial, building, plumbing and mechanical codes.
• Valid Driver’s License and clean driving record.
• Ability to complete the essential duties and responsibilities of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
Desired Qualifications
• Post-Secondary degree with emphasis in engineering, building technology, construction management, or equivalent.
• Experience working in residential and/or commercial construction.
• Current I.C.C. Building Inspector and/or Commercial Plans Examiner Certification.
• Experience working in municipal inspections and completing commercial plan review.
• Delegation from the State of Minnesota to complete inspections of state licensed facilities.

Work Environment & Physical Demands
Work is conducted both indoors and outdoors, subjecting employees to both inside and outside environmental conditions. Employees may be subject to some hazards while visiting inspections sites.
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to:
• Regularly read and interpret documents and other written material.
• Regularly communicate and exchange information with others in person, over the telephone, and using written communication methods.
• Frequently remain in a stationary position and regularly move within the building to attend meetings and access files and office machinery.
• Frequently traverse around the City, operating City vehicles, to conduct site visits.
• Regularly position self in tight spaces and up or down stairs and ladders to perform inspections.
• Regularly operate computers and other office equipment, such as a copy machine, printer, and telephone, as well as equipment/tools consistently found in municipal inspections.
• Occasionally move or transport items weighing up to 25 pounds.
