JOB DESCRIPTION
Rosie’s Place was founded in 1974 as the first women’s shelter in the United States. Our mission is to provide a safe and nurturing environment to help poor and homeless women maintain their dignity, seek opportunity, and find security in their lives.
Over the years, we have become much more than a shelter. We are a multi-service community center that not only provides meals and shelter but also creates answers for thousands of women a year through wide-ranging support, housing, and education services. Rosie’s Place relies on the generous support of individuals, foundations, and corporations and does not accept any city, state, or federal funding.
OPPORTUNITY
The Workforce Development Advocate provides key assistance to Rosie’s Place guests while supporting and validating their sense of self-worth and responsibility. Under the supervision of the Director of Workforce Development, the Workforce Development Advocate provides one-to-one assistance, information, and referrals to appropriate resources, consistent with Rosie’s Place mission, philosophy, core values, and policies.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide individualized support to guests in identifying and pursuing their employment-related goals.
- Encourage self-sufficiency, responsibility, and independence.
- Collaborate with other Rosie’s Place programs to facilitate and coordinate on-site training workshops on topics such as computer literacy, interview skills, professional boundaries, and emotional regulation in the workplace.
- Provide one-on-one support to guests in writing resumes and cover letters tailored to their career goals.
- Assist guests with job searches and online application processes, offering guidance throughout.
- Maintain contact with employed guests to offer ongoing support and resources for job retention.
- Provide information and supported referrals to specialized external job training and career development programs.
- Share information and connect guests with additional on-site support services, including those offered by Rosie’s Place and partner organizations.
- Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of local employment resources.
- Actively participate in community workforce development efforts by attending meetings, hiring events, and conducting regular visits to training programs and potential employers.
- Plan and coordinate on-site employment resources events and tabling sessions.
- Accurately maintain guest records in Salesforce, a database to track guest support, ensuring thorough and timely data entry.
- Uphold confidentiality in handling all guest-related information and documentation.
- Maintain a strong, current understanding of the needs and circumstances of guests being supported.
- Attend weekly supervision sessions, regular program meetings, and monthly all-staff meetings.
- Provide respectful and dignified interventions during guest crises or emergencies.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Workforce Development.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bilingual proficiency in Haitian Creole, Mandarin, Cantonese, Portuguese, Spanish, or Cape Verdean Creole is strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated commitment to social justice and alignment with the mission of Rosie’s Place.
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in career counseling, preferably in a community-based or nonprofit setting.
- Solid understanding of career development theories and models, particularly as applied in community settings.
- Experience facilitating workshops and delivering training, especially with diverse and underserved populations.
- Bachelor’s degree in psychology, sociology, behavioral science, education, or a related field preferred.
- Strong communication, writing, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Proficiency in computer applications, with the ability to quickly learn and adapt to new systems.
- Strong problem-solving abilities, sound judgment, and the capacity to remain calm and think clearly in high-pressure situations.
WORK EXPECTATIONS
We are a hands-on team and seek employees who are passionate about our work and service to our community. The Advocate is expected to work onsite at Rosie’s Place during their work week and engage regularly with staff, guests, and volunteers. While this position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule, flexibility with days on-site is required to fulfill work obligations and to take part in organization meetings, trainings, and events.
We continue to adapt to safety protocols related to COVID-19 as we understand them, and all employees must follow our safety protocols. Among these protocols, we require all employees to be up to date with their COVID vaccinations, undergo regular COVID testing, and submit results. Requests for medical or religious exemptions from the COVID-19 vaccination are considered. Masks are required to be worn on all Rosie’s Place properties at all times.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
The starting salary range for this position is $55,000-$65,000, commensurate with experience.
