EMPLOYEE RELATIONS SPECIALIST

The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office (OPSO), New Orleans, Louisiana, provides the care, custody, 

control, and rehabilitation of its residents. The Mission of the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office is to provide community safety and service to the people of Orleans Parish by protecting the rights and humanity of people in custody, supporting the wellness of our staff, and facilitating community connections to restore public trust and maintain a healthy community.


The Employee Relations Specialist is responsible for focusing on fostering positive employee relations, resolving workplace conflicts, and ensuring compliance with labor laws. The responsibilities include investigating complaints and mediating disputes.  The Employee Relations Specialist will act as a liaison between employees and management, aiming to create a positive and productive work environment


JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

 

    Investigating and resolving employee complaints and disputes by conducting thorough investigations, gathering evidence, and recommending appropriate actions.

    Mediate conflicts and facilitate communication by acting as a neutral party to help resolve disagreements between employees or between employees and management.

    Interpreting and executing employee relations policies and procedures by providing guidance to supervisors and managers.

    Educating supervisors and managers on performance management, conflict resolution, and legal compliance to ensure compliance with labor laws and regulations.

    Staying up to date on employment laws and ensuring the agency’s practices are in line with legal requirements.

    Managing employee grievances and disciplinary actions by participating on the Disciplinary Board to offer HR advice regarding policies and procedures.

    Discussing disciplinary actions with leadership to ensure fair and equitable distribution of reprimands.

    Develop and implement employee engagement initiatives to improve employee morale, motivation, and overall satisfaction.

    Respond timely to all unemployment claims and requests from the Unemployment Commission representatives.

    Represent OPSO in all unemployment hearings and gather all necessary documentation and witnesses for same.

    Any and all other employee related duties given from the Director of HR.


Requirements:

    Must be a High School Graduate or have GED

    Bachelor's degree in Human Resources or Business Administration preferred.

    Two to four years of experience in Human Resources or a related field.

    HR Generalist or related experience in a large organization.

    Knowledge of HR guidelines and common practices.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    Working knowledge of agency polices, employment laws, rules and regulations.

    Demonstrated ability to think outside of the box in the development of innovative rewards and recognition initiatives.

    Ability to use analytical, statistical and reporting skills for compiling data to support decision making.

    Sound knowledge of HR best practices relating to rewards and disciplinary reprimands.

    Ability to guide and influence managers in implementing initiatives.

    Good level of computer literacy in using range of Microsoft applications. Advanced Excel skills.

    Demonstrated above average creativity, problem solving, conflict resolution and decision-making skills.

    Strong oral and written communication skills are required as well as the ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
