Job Summary: Under the guidance of a RN and LVN, the Patient Care Tech provides direct and indirect patient care duties.
Essential Functions:

  • Reports any change in physical condition or behavior of patient to RN or Shift Manager.
  • Provides hygiene care to assigned patients and documents care in EMR.
  • Assists patients in ordering meals, feeding patient if necessary, removing tray from room and accurately documents dietary intake in EMR.
  • Anticipates patients’ needs and answers call lights in a timely manner.
  • Carries out fall prevention interventions for patients at risk; Keeps bed in low position, siderails up, bed alarm activated; responds quickly when alarm sounds.
  • Prepares patient room for receiving an admission, including presence of O2 and suction set-ups.
  • Follows Valuables procedure.
  • Accurately obtains and records in ERM vital signs, O2 sats, blood sugars, daily weights, and intake/output on assigned patients.
  • Collects and accurately labels specimens and transports specimen to proper area in the lab.
  • Operates equipment safely and reports malfunctions.
  • Runs controls on glucometer; makes sure control bottles are dated accurately.
  • Adheres to infection control policies.
  • Makes sure Redi-bath temperature is recorded daily.
  • Uses proper body mechanics when transferring patient from bed/chair and uses lift equipment when required.
  • For Telemetry patients properly places electrodes and monitor on patient; brings monitor back to tele room when patient is discharged.

  • Attends staff meetings; follows HIPAA guidelines; follows patient rights policy; complies with the compliance program; demonstrates knowledge of role in a disaster; demonstrates knowledge of fire and fire drill procedures; working knowledge of hospital emergency codes; always utilizes standard precautions in the clinical setting; safely manages the environment of care by demonstrating a working knowledge of the requirements of the: Life Safety program, Utilities Management program, Hazardous Materials program, Emergency Preparedness program, Safety Management program, Medical Equipment Management program, Security Management program.

Requirements

Experience:

  • Prior Experience as Patient Care Technician.
  • Computer Skills.
  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend medical terminology.

Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.

Licensure/Certifications

  • BLS from AHA or ARC.
  • Certified Nursing Assistant license from the Texas Nurse Aide Registry or EMT certification or CMA certification preferred.
