About the Department

The City of Aiken is accepting applications for a Youth/Family Coordinator to join our Public Safety department.

Position Duties

  • Organize, facilitate, and coordinate initiatives and programs that encourage officer engagement with community youth; i.e. sports programs, the arts, parenting programs, Youth Court. Research and incorporate evidence-based methods with programs and initiatives
  • Establish working relationships with other departments, divisions, local youth, and non-profit agencies
  • Serve as a resource and referral center for children, youth, and families, including crisis intervention
  • Participate in community collaborations to identify needs and critical issues for children, youth, and families
  • Establish platform/methods to educate the community on ways to make a difference in the lives of children, youth, and families
  • Advocate for children, youth, and families by communicating relevant and timely information via available platforms to ADPS staff, youth serving organizations, and/or the community at large
  • As requested, provide technical support to organizations that work to help children and families reach their potential
Other Responsibilities
  • Acts as a liaison between the community and the department and provides assistance to both
  • Assists in training line personnel
  • Increase awareness of the community assistance program to the community in an effort to encourage timely reporting and assistance
  • Develops and presents educational programs concerning youth and family programs
  • Attends seminars and studies written materials to maintain knowledge of current practices in the field

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Public Administration, Criminal Justice, Sociology, or closely related field (preferred)
  • Three years of applied experience in working with juveniles and their families; or any combination of experience and training which provides the desire knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • Valid state-issued driver's license in good standing
  • Analytical abilities are required to interpret data, recognize discrepancies contained in data, and correct or determine the cause of discrepancies
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to be pleasant and helpful to citizens and businesses, and courteous of fellow employees while performing duties
  • Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail with constant breaks in concentration associated with answering phones or speaking to citizens
