About the Department

The Junior Construction Inspector will review contractors' work to ensure compliance with MBTA project contracts, plans and specifications. The Junior Construction Inspector will report to the Resident Engineer.

Position Duties


  • Review construction work to ensure conformance to plans and specifications.
  • Compute construction quantities and assist in preparing reports for interim and final payments.
  • Review construction work of contractors and subcontractors to ensure compliance with contract documents, reporting any discrepancy to the Resident Engineer.
  • Perform inspections of construction materials at source and on project sites for conformity to specifications.
  • Assist the Resident Engineer and Construction Inspectors in investigating and reporting construction and safety related problems encountered in the field.
  • Participate in regular safety inspection “walk downs”.
  • Maintain a daily project diary, files, test reports, etc. as directed by the Resident Engineer or Project Manager.
  • Perform load counts of material delivered to construction sites.
  • Obtain samples of materials to be sent to the laboratory for testing purposes.
  • Drive a company or personal vehicle to visit work sites and to assist at emergencies and/or events as needed.
  • Respond to each inquiry, whether from a customer, vendor or co-worker in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Work any and all shifts as assigned or directed.
  • Respond or report to work as directed by supervisory personnel for emergencies, extreme weather conditions, or any other abnormal conditions that impair service or the safety of service, twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) day per week.
  • Perform all other duties and projects that may be assigned

Minimum Qualifications


  • An Associate Degree from an accredited institution.
  • Zero (0) to One (1) year of field experience working in commercial and/or large-scale construction projects.
  • Effective quantitative, organizational and analytical skills.
  • A valid driver’s license.
  • The ability to effectively communicate with outside contractors, regulatory agencies, community organizations and others on technical and sensitive matters.
  • The ability to successfully complete all Authority required training.
  • Have excellent customer service and conflict resolution skills.
  • The ability to provide internal and external customers with a courteous and professional experience.
  • The ability to work any and all shifts and/or locations as assigned or directed.
  • Be available to work twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week.
  • The ability to work effectively with a diverse workforce.
