Job Description Summary

Organization Summary Statement:
Responsible for assisting Agricultural Technician Supervisors in the day-to-day operations and for maintenance of farm and specialized agricultural research equipment. Work with managers to coordinate activities for researchers and others performing research and extension activities at the facility. Carry out field work - tilling, planting, fertilizing, spraying, harvesting - for traditional and non-traditional agronomic and horticultural crops and research plots.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED

EXPERIENCE: Three years in agricultural work, one year of which was in agricultural research.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

Thorough knowledge of and skill in the use of farm equipment. General knowledge of and ability to use related laboratory equipment. General knowledge of basic mathematics and ability to perform mathematical and algebraic calculations. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to lift and transport agricultural supplies, tools, and equipment, to climb and to perform extensive standing and walking. Ability to wear and work in personal protective equipment. Ability to work in extreme weather conditions.

OTHER:

Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.

Position Overview and Key Responsibilities:

The Western Maryland Research and Education Center (WMREC) is seeking an Agricultural Technician. Under general supervision, the Agricultural Technician will assist in the day-to-day operations and maintenance of facility and specialized agricultural research equipment. Working with managers to coordinate activities for researchers and others performing research and extension activities at the facility. Will carry out field work assisting with -- tilling, planting, fertilizing, spraying, harvesting -- for traditional and non-traditional agronomic and horticultural crops and research plots.

About the Western Maryland Research and Education Center (WMREC)

The Western Maryland Research and Education Center (WMREC) lies nestled in the foothills of Maryland’s South Mountain range.  Established by the University of Maryland in 1977, the 500-acre center is located near Keedysville, Maryland.  The facilities are managed by the Maryland Agricultural Experiment Station (MAES).  The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources’ Departments of Entomology, Plant Science & Landscape Architecture, Environmental Science and Technology, Animal and Avian Sciences and the University of Maryland Extension (UME) have active research projects at WMREC. Research conducted at WMREC includes corn hybrid, and small grain variety improvement trials, pasture management and rotational grazing, animal health, perennial weed control, cropping systems, integrated pest management (IPM), tree and small fruit, pumpkin variety trials, mobile high tunnel food crops, hops, and nutrient management.  In addition, the enology laboratory supports Maryland’s growing wine industry.  The facility coordinates with agricultural industry representatives, USDA, Maryland Department of Agriculture and county Extension educators.

Licenses:

  • Maryland Commercial Class A or B Driver's License (CDL); and/or obtain within one year of employment.

  • Maryland Commercial Pesticide Applicator's Licenses - and/or obtain within two years of employment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS 

Ability to work in a harsh environment, excessive heat, cold, dirt and noise.  Must be able to tolerate strenuous physical activity in adverse weather conditions.  Ability to lift 50-100 lbs. and transport supplies, tools, and equipment; climb and perform extensive standing and walking.  Ability to wear personal protective equipment.
