About the Department

Performs work of a general custodial nature,   constructs, maintains, and/or supervises use of the City's park system and facilities.  Incumbent may train other Park/Facility Attendants and custodians as needed.

Position Duties

Under direct supervision, performs assigned tasks to clean, construct, and maintain, and/or supervise use of the City's park system and City facilities. Including but not limited to: facility cleaning (pick up and remove trash, clean restrooms, vacuum, mop, etc.); repair/clear boat launch and floats, sweep parking lots and walkways, etc.); and facility use and supervision (prepare and restore facilities for use, enforce park rules, assist the public, etc.).
 

  • Set-up and takedown furniture for rental groups
     
  • Uses a variety of hand and power operated tools and equipment such as shovels, picks, blowers, pumps, drills, brooms, vacuum cleaners, floor buffers, auto scrubbers, and hand tools to complete assigned tasks.
     
  • Operates machinery and equipment such as a pickup truck or other light duty vehicle to complete assigned maintenance and construction tasks.
     
  • Performs routine daily maintenance and servicing of equipment including cleaning, fueling, greasing, and checking oil and other fluid levels as needed.
     
  • Determines when routine repairs are needed and coordinates repairs as identified by supervisor.
     
  • Order and maintains custodial supplies.
     
  • Performs work in compliance with federal and state laws, OSHA and State WISHA (Labor and Industries) and Department Policies and Procedures.
     
  • Responds to public inquiries in a courteous manner, provides response within scope of knowledge or refers the matter to employees of higher classification.
     
  • Performs others duties as assigned.

Skills and Abilities Required:
  • Working knowledge of cleaning equipment and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Custodial methods, materials, supplies, and equipment.
  • Working knowledge of maintenance equipment and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of safety standards and precautions related to maintenance/cleaning activities.
  • Ability to use the mechanical tools of the trade.
  • Ability to read, write and comprehend the English language.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral directions.
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a work crew.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public.
  • Skill in using the hand tools and equipment of the laboring trade.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Basic first aid methods and procedures.
  • Operate pickup trucks and other light duty vehicles skillfully and safely.
  • Ability to pass the background check for this position.


Physical Demands and Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls.  The employee frequently is required to talk or hear.  The employee is required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
 
Depending upon the facility, the work is performed indoors or outdoors in all types of weather.  The employee is exposed to a variety of potential hazards associated with working near or in traffic, park activities and maintenance equipment.  Employees are required to routinely work any time between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 12:30 a.m., in the evenings, on weekends, on holidays, and work odd shift hours or other hours as assigned.
 
Duties require strenuous physical activity such as lifting and carrying heavy objects up to 50 lbs. routinely, shoveling, and other manual labor.




 

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Educational and Experience Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or G.E.D. and
  • One or more years experience in the custodial field; or
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the applicant with the necessary knowledge, skills, and ability required to perform the essential duties of the job.

License and Certificate Requirements:

  • Washington State Drivers License and a driving record acceptable to the City.
  • First Aid Certification and CPR Certification within 6 months of hire
  • Must pass a background check.

Other Qualifications

Hours of Work:

Monday - Friday:  6:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

This position requires membership in Public, Professional & Office-Clerical Employees and Drivers Local Union No. 763 (Representing the Office-Clerical Technical Employees)(Teamsters).
