The Pediatric Medicine Clinics at McMaster Children's Hospital provides outpatient care to over 100,000 pediatric patients from Hamilton and the surrounding area. It is a dynamic, fast paced environment comprised of numerous sub-specialty clinics that facilitate the unique health care needs of children, using a family centered model of care.


The primary focus of this position is the General Pediatrics and Medicine Clinics. Through in-depth psychosocial assessments, the Social Worker will identify child and family strengths, stressors, problem-solving abilities, dynamics, interactions, attitudes, feelings and cultural issues in relation to the needs of the acute and chronic patients and family, both in the outpatient and inpatient settings. The Social Worker will work collaboratively with the team to perform interdisciplinary assessments aimed at developing and implementing a plan of intervention, which addresses education, coping and compliance. This will be achieved through a variety of modalities including individual and family therapy, group work, consultation, case management, crisis intervention, patient and family education, community outreach and advocacy. The Social Worker will identify and make referrals to appropriate supports and resources and assist families in accessing financial assistance programs when necessary.

  • Master's Degree in Clinical Social Work from an accredited School of Social Work
  • Current certificate of Registration with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers
  • Minimum (3) years recent experience with children and families in an ambulatory tertiary care pediatric setting providing individual and family therapy
  • Knowledge and demonstrated use of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy specifically within the pediatric population
  • Familiarity with the challenges facing children and families managing digestive disease related disorders
  • Knowledge of community resources and referral process
  • Familiarity with the Mental Health Act, Consent to Treatment Act, Child and Family Services Act
  • Demonstrated expertise in assessment, psychoeducation, counseling, crisis intervention and advocacy skills in working with children, adolescents and families coping with medical and/or mental health issues
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, changing environment
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing learning and the ability to teach
  • Proven ability to organize, prioritize and problem-solve effectively
