Job Summary: Ice Miller is seeking a Senior Business Development Manager to lead business development efforts for the Litigation, Bankruptcy, Intellectual Property, and Data & Cybersecurity Practice Groups. The ideal candidate will have 10+ years of experience in law firm business development, with a proven track record of cross-selling and enhancing client relationships. This partner-facing role involves developing and executing comprehensive marketing and business development strategies. We’re looking for a forward-thinking, resourceful team member with deep knowledge of legal marketing best practices and a strong interest in the litigation marketplace.
***Salary in the range of $150,000 - $190,000 dependent on location and experience level***
Essential Job Duties:
- Collaborate with attorneys to design and implement strategic business development initiatives focused on attracting, retaining, and expanding client relationships.
- Partner with practice group leaders and directors to develop and monitor BD budgets.
- Conduct client, prospect, industry, and market research to identify new business opportunities and provide attorneys with competitive insights.
- Monitor industry and client news to proactively identify BD opportunities and communicate lead generation ideas to attorneys.
- Develop and manage systems to track, measure, and report on BD initiatives; advise attorneys on effectiveness and strategy.
- Build relationships across practice groups to support cross-selling initiatives and achieve BD goals.
- Maintain marketing collateral and experience content, including brochures, matter lists, and website copy.
- Train and coach attorneys on BD and marketing skills, including lead generation, pitching, client retention, and content marketing.
- Analyze market intelligence to provide strategic guidance and recommendations.
- Collaborate with the proposals team to manage RFP responses for the practice groups.
- Oversee legal directory submissions (e.g., Chambers, Legal 500, IFLR), including strategy development and content review.
- Attend and actively participate in practice group meetings.
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Business, or related field;
- Ten years related experience required; or equivalent combination of education and experience (8 years working with Litigation practices);
- Prior experience working in a large legal or professional services firm is required;
- Expert knowledge of and ability to apply legal marketing and business development best practices and related tools to advance practice group and/or attorney goals;
- Must demonstrate critical thinking skills, including the ability to gather, analyze, and apply research and data to make recommendations consistent with business goals;
- Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills and the ability to synthesize and clearly communicate ideas to varying audiences;
- Ability to establish and maintain the trust and confidence of key stakeholders and act as a strategic advisor;
- Exceptional organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage and implement multiple initiatives simultaneously in a deadline-driven environment, including the ability to prioritize, track progress of tasks, and delegate to others;
- Strong diplomatic skills with the ability to work effectively across all levels of the firm;
- Displays high attention to detail in work product;
- Advanced user of the MS Office suite, including Word, Power Point and Excel, as well as Adobe Acrobat; proficient using graphics tools within these applications;
- Flexibility and willingness to respond to issues during and outside of core business hours.
