Are you a seasoned Civil Engineer with a passion for building great neighbourhoods? Do you thrive in a leadership role where you can mentor a team and oversee complex infrastructure projects? The City of Edmonton is looking for a Senior Engineer to join our Neighbourhoods Design team in the Building Great Neighbourhoods branch.

As the Senior Engineer, you will be a subject matter expert responsible for overseeing the design of a variety of engineering assignments for Neighbourhood Renewal projects. This role focuses primarily on transportation infrastructure, including Neighbourhood reconstruction, pavement renewals and alley renewal. You will provide technical oversight to both in-house teams and external consultants, ensuring all projects align with the City's high standards as well as providing mentorship and leadership to project engineers, engineers in training and engineering technologists.

What will you do?:

 

  • Provide design oversight for multi-disciplined engineering consultants on Building Great Neighbourhoods projects

  • Review, evaluate and provide technical oversight during the planning phase

  • Lead the Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) for externally produced engineering drawings and reports

  • Provide design oversight and support for in-house design services, including reviewing and stamping engineering drawings as the Professional Engineer

  • Manage and provide leadership to a team of professional and technical staff, including mentoring Engineers, Engineers in Training and technologists

  • Oversee, lead, and mentor a team of professional and technical staff, including performance evaluations

  • Research and develop design and construction best practices, standards, and guidelines

  • Represent the unit's interests at the program level and advise on decisions related to Building Great Neighbourhoods projects

  • Coordination with internal City groups and utility partners on design elements to be included in neighbourhood projects


  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering 

  • Must be a Professional Engineer (P. Eng) in good standing and registered with APEGA. Applicants in a different Canadian jurisdiction eligible for Inter-Provincial Mobility (IPMA) with APEGA may be considered. Registration with APEGA must be obtained prior to the commencement of employment.

  • A minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible experience in transportation/roadway planning & design, project management, and people management.

  • Working knowledge of geometric design of roadways.

  • Familiarity with design standards and guidelines such as the City of Edmonton Complete Streets Design and Construction standards and TAC (Transportation Association of Canada) guidelines.

  • Strong conflict resolution and negotiation skills.

  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and produce results in a fast-paced environment.

Assets:

  • Additional training or knowledge of traffic engineering, drainage engineering, urban design, pavement design, and construction techniques

  • Demonstrated experience managing in-field construction projects

  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and Civil 3D

 

Conditions of employment:

 

  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or provincial equivalent). Must obtain business auto insurance for personal vehicle use on City business

 

Work Environment:

  • This position ​may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement ​with ​the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite​
