MAINTENANCE WORKER I
BASIC PURPOSE OF THE JOB CLASSIFICATION
To learn, assist with, perform a variety of basic work in the maintenance and repair of District buildings, grounds, and equipment; and to do related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Employees in this classification relatively close supervision and guidance within an established framework of standard policies and procedures. Employees in this classification learn and perform a variety of basic maintenance assignments at District facilities. It is the entry and first working level in the Maintenance Worker class series.

Maintenance Supervisor and Director of Maintenance, Custodial, and Grounds.
EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES ( The following information is descriptive and is not restrictive as to duties required)
• Learns and performs a variety of basic assignments in the maintenance and repair of District buildings, grounds, and equipment.
• Learns and performs basic carpentry work in the alteration, repair and maintenance of buildings, partitions, forms, cabinets, floors, roofs, doors, windows, screens, wood fixtures and furniture.
• Prepares wood and metal surfaces for painting by sanding, scraping, sandblasting, washing, dusting, and filing.
• Learns and performs basic repairs to electrical wiring, switches, outlets, fixtures and motors.
• Performs oiling, adjusting, cleaning, and monitoring of a variety of motorized and mechanical equipment.
• Mixes, pours, and finishes concrete.
• Repairs asphalt parking lots and schools yards.
• Learns procedures and makes basic repairs and adjustments to plumbing equipment including pipes, washers and gaskets, faucets, floats, and valves.
• Cleans and changes filters in HVAC units.
• Learns Replaces door hinges, locks, and thresholds.
• Installs, repairs, and/or maintains electrical receptacles, switches, controls and lighting systems.
• Assists with routine maintenance of the High School Swimming Pool in the balancing of water chemical levels, operation of pumps, and repair of heaters and generators.
• Operates a variety of hand and power tools including saws, portable welders, electric drills, pipe threader, and joiners.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Frequently stand and walk for extended periods; stoop, kneel, and crouch to pick up or move objects, office equipment, and furniture; ability to perform heavy physical labor for sustained periods of time; physical ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds; physical ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 150 pounds with assistance; normal manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communications; use hand and power tools, including saws, electric drills, pipe threaders, joiners, welders and jack hammers.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed in a variety of District facilities both inside and outside in various types of weather; exposure to controlled and hazardous substances, pesticides, and other chemicals; continuous contact with staff and the public.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of :
• Basic knowledge of building trades work.
• Safe use and operation of a variety of tools and equipment used in repair and maintenance work.
Ability to:
• Learn and perform basic maintenance and repair work on District buildings and facilities.
• Recognize and locate conditions which require maintenance and repair work.
• Use and safely operate a variety of hand tools, power tools, and equipment used in building/equipment maintenance.
• Perform arithmetic calculations at the level necessary for satisfactory job performance.
• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.
• Effective communicate both orally and in writing.
Training and Experience: Any combination of training and experience which would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:
