About the Department


The Charlottesville Fire Department is seeking candidates for the position of Firefighter/EMT. No prior fire or emergency medical service experience is necessary. Firefighters perform responsible protective service work in fire suppression, prevention, and human health emergency medical services under the general supervision of a company and/or shift commander at the rank of Fire Captain.

Note: This position may be filled as a Firefighter/Medic depending on qualifications and departmental needs.

Pay and Benefits:
During initial training, new recruits will be on a 40-hour per week schedule. After initial training, will be placed on a 56-hour schedule (24-hour shift). Typical starting base pay is $52,503.36 annually ($18.03 an hour based on a 56-hour schedule).  Firefighter and EMT training will be provided at time of hire/orientation. Being certified as a firefighter or EMT is not a requirement for hire. Lateral hires from a career Fire Department may qualify for a higher starting pay. 
  • This is a full-time, non-exempt, position. Position Duties

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Responds to fire alarms, operates equipment and related apparatus and assists in the suppression of fires including rescue, advancing lines, entry, ventilating and salvage work, extrication, and emergency medical care of victims.
  • Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls, inspects for gas leaks, secures vehicle accidents, etc.
  • Performs the duties and functions of an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).
  • Performs emergency medical evaluations and uses effective, appropriate emergency services methods while on scene and in route to a medical facility.
  • Determines the best course of medical treatment for a broad variety of medical and trauma emergencies ranging from non-emergent to critically sick or injured patients. 
  • Performs daily inspections of assigned medical supplies to make sure that proper supplies are present and not out-of-date and to assure supplies are in the correct locations.
  • Performs cleanup and overhaul work, establishes temporary utility services.
  • Answers, receives, and transmits radio and telephone messages.
  • Performs daily fire engine checks utilizing an appropriate application to maintain compliance to operate the engine.
  • Performs daily inspections of assigned firefighting gear and apparatus by physically and visually examining including turnout gear, boots, SCBA, mask, and/or other equipment.
  • Assists in maintaining and repairing fire apparatus and equipment (according to Fire Department standards), and cleaning fire station and grounds.
  • Checks fire hydrant flows.
  • Reviews EMS protocols on a regular basis.
  • Performs fire code inspections of business establishments and prepares pre-fire plans.
  • Drives and operates Fire Department vehicles and functions as Bravo seat rider, or on special teams, as required.
  • Participates in continuing training and instruction program by individual study of technical material and attendance at scheduled drills and classes.
  • Maintains required certifications by attending training classes, workshops, seminars, or conferences in order to maintain current knowledge of fire prevention, safety, firefighting procedures, emergency medical procedures, and any other related, appropriate training.
  • Maintains physical fitness by performing daily fitness training exercises for fit-for-duty readiness.
  • Conducts station tours for the public, school and community demonstrations and programs.
  • May be required to work regular stand-by periods.
  • Subject to be called back to work to the City in emergencies or as needed to provide necessary services to the public.  Must have the ability to be contacted and respond based on Departmental guidelines.   
  • Responsible for appropriate use and maintenance of equipment, tools, and other resources, including work time.
  • Regular and reliable attendance.
Other Duties
  • Performs additional duties to support operational requirements as apparent or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED.
Certifications/Licenses/Other Requirements:
  • Required to successfully pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen.
  • Required to successfully pass a post-offer physical exam.

  • Must agree to and sign a "no tobacco/smoking' contract.
  • Within one year of start date, possession of Virginia Firefighter II certification
  • Within one year of start date, possession of Virginia Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) – Basic.
  • Within one year of start date, possession of NIMS ICS 100, 200, 700 and 800 certifications.
  • Within one year of start date, possession of emergency vehicle operations certification, with proficiency to serve as driver/operator on all motorized fire apparatus.
  • Other certification/instruction as deemed necessary by the department or assigned area.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics:
Job Knowledge
  • General fire suppression and prevention knowledge to perform work assigned with or without instruction. 
  • General knowledge of technical firefighting principles and techniques and principles of hydraulics applied to fire suppression. 
  • Knowledge of and the ability to research and apply code and statutes in performing fire safety inspections.
  • General knowledge of emergency care methods, techniques, and equipment, including appropriate medical terminology and medication effect and appropriate dosages.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the area geography.
  • General knowledge of elementary physics, chemistry, and mechanics. 
  • Familiarity with safety guidelines for the operation of tools and equipment and in routine operations. Follows EMS and firefighter guidelines independently and recognizes and reports potential hazards.

  • Intermediate: Ability to read and understand written materials such as policies, regulations, journals, multi-step instructional manuals, medical protocols, and reference materials.

  • Intermediate: Ability to keep records and compose documents and reports, prepare materials such as summaries and explanations with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech.

  • Intermediate: General knowledge of elementary physics, chemistry and mechanics applying formulas, practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions, and measurement.

  • Skilled: Knowledge of technical firefighting principles and techniques; principles of hydraulics applied to fire suppression. Required to gather data using advanced measurement and analytical methods. Basic firefighting skills.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with specialized emergency and medical tools and equipment.
  • Sufficient computer skills to compile reports and data with minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge of EMS principles and techniques. 
Fiscal Responsibilities
  • Basic: Requires collecting/maintaining receipts for purchases made for the City for auditing purposes.

  • No responsibility for the direction or supervision of others. May provide training and instruction to others.

Other Qualifications

Physical Demands:

  • Very heavy work: Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 25 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
  • Wears a self-contained breathing apparatus and must be able to pass a fit for seal test.
  • Frequent carrying, pushing/pulling, sitting, standing, walking, use of hands and fingers to handle and operate objects, tools or controls and reach and stretch with hands and arms in full range motion.
  • Occasional climbing, balancing, jumping, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.

  • Requires the operation and use of appropriate fire apparatus or emergency services machines, tools, and equipment.
  • Typically requires use of standard office equipment and telephone, and related software and hardware; and any other equipment as appropriate or as assigned.
Work Environment:
  • The noise level in the working environment is usually moderate, except during certain firefighting or EMT activities when noise levels may be loud.  
  • Regularly works in outside weather conditions. 
  • Occasionally works near moving mechanical parts, in high precarious places and confined spaces. 
  • Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electric shock and vibration. 
  • Often exposed to excessively high temperature intensities and sudden temperature changes.
  • During emergency situations the work may be performed in varied environments utilizing department assigned clothing and equipment (personal protective equipment, body armor and other specialty equipment). Work may be performed in challenging terrain, tight or confined spaces, remote settings, and unprotected heights. Work may be performed in extreme temperatures and may involve exposure to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and include a risk of electric shock and vibration. The noise level in the working environment may vary from quiet to loud during firefighting or EMT activities.
  • During an emergency situation the work may be performed with other environmental conditions such as, working under rioting conditions, sporting events (some in excess of 50,000 participants) and musical concerts in excess of 12,000 participants.
