Description

A.T. Still University (ATSU) is seeking a full-time exempt Learning Specialist on the Mesa, Arizona campus. This position reports to the Director of Learning Resources and Accommodation Services and supports student learning by helping students identify obstacles and develop strategies to improve academic performance. While primarily supporting AZ campus students, the position will also assist CA and MO campus students as needed. Key duties include assessing learning preferences and current skills, educating and advising on effective, individualized study techniques, and coordinating peer-tutoring services. 


Work Schedule: During the initial 90-day probationary period, this position is fully in-person on campus (Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.). After successful completion of the probationary period, there may be an opportunity for a hybrid schedule with 1–2 days per week of telecommuting. 


Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Advise students individually on successful learning strategies, study skills, time management, self-regulation, and test-taking. 
  • Assess students' learning preferences and study habits to provide personalized support. 
  • Guide students in creating study plans for courses and board exams.
  • Recruit, train, supervise, and coordinate peer tutors and coordinate external tutoring specialists as needed.
  • Make referrals as appropriate, especially to behavioral health and wellness counselors for students with personal, emotional, behavioral, or family issues and to accommodation services for students with disabilities. 
  • Accept referrals from faculty and from the University promotion boards.
  • Develop and deliver group presentations/seminars relevant to academic success and for the promotion of Learning Resources and Accommodation Services.
  • Deliver individual and group training on effective learning strategies.
  • Educate students on and promote awareness of resources and support services.
  • Flex availability earlier or later on occasion, as needed by student or event schedules.
  • Keep calendar, appointments, and advising notes current and accurate.
  • Assist with New Student Orientation, Commencement, and other Student Affairs events as requested/assigned.

Requirements

Education & Experience:

  • Master's degree in a relevant field, e.g., Education, Educational Psychology, or Counseling. 
  • Experience in Academic support/coaching to students, applying evidence-based learning strategies, interpreting learning assessments, managing peer tutoring, developing workshops, and collaborating with faculty/staff.
  • Knowledge of Principles of adult learning, learning theory, and cognitive development.
  • Evidence-based strategies to enhance academic performance and self-regulated learning.
  • Using assessment tools for learning preferences and academic skill development.
  • Test-taking strategies and approaches for reducing test anxiety.
  • Best practices for managing and evaluating peer tutoring programs.
  • Effective communication strategies for diverse audiences, including students, faculty, and staff.
  • Methods for building collaborative relationships across campus and with community partners.
  • Educational technologies and tools that support learning and accessibility.
  • Ability to teach evidence-based learning and test-taking strategies.
  • Proficiency in interpreting learning assessments, preferably LASSI and SuccessTypes/MBTI.
  • Strong verbal (including public speaking/presentation), written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Skill in guiding students to set goals and apply learning strategies.
  • Strong time management, self-direction, and attention to detail.
  • Competence with Windows-based computing and willingness to learn new technologies.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with students, faculty, and staff.

The salary range for this position is $56,600 - 67,953 based on education and experience.
