UFG is currently seeking a Director, Technical Accounting & Implementation who is responsible for guiding the organization on complex accounting matters, ensuring compliance with GAAP, statutory accounting principles (STAT), and regulatory requirements. This role provides technical expertise on accounting policies, oversees the technical content of financial statements, and leads implementation of accounting initiatives that optimize policies, processes, and controls.

As a trusted advisor to Finance leadership, this role partners with business and operational leaders across property & casualty, specialty, and reinsurance lines to evaluate the accounting implications of transactions, support financial disclosures, and drive continuous improvement in accounting practices. The Director also leads efforts to modernize accounting systems and processes, ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and transparency in financial reporting.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Technical Accounting Leadership
    • Advise on the development and maintenance of accounting policies and procedures.
    • Research and assess technical accounting issues, including evaluating the impact of new and proposed accounting standards.
    • Ensure financial statements and disclosures comply with GAAP, STAT, SEC, and insurance industry regulatory requirements.
    • Review financial disclosures in SEC and statutory filings, particularly those impacted by new accounting pronouncements.
  • Transaction & Advisory Support
    • Partner with business units to identify and evaluate transactions with potential accounting or financial reporting impact.
    • Provide technical guidance on complex or non-routine transactions across P&C, specialty, and reinsurance portfolios.
    • Communicate technical and operational accounting implications clearly to finance and business leadership.
  • Process Improvement & Implementation
    • Lead or provide guidance on implementation of finance department initiatives to achieve overall finance strategy.
    • Advise on the development and implementation of process improvements to enhance accounting excellence and efficiency.
    • Identify and execute improvements within the financial close and reporting function, safeguarding data quality and accuracy.
    • Drive accounting system upgrade projects, ensuring new technologies improve efficiency, controls, and reporting accuracy.
  • Collaboration & Leadership
    • Partner with cross-functional stakeholders to align accounting policies, processes, and disclosures with enterprise objectives.
    • Ensure consistent and effective communication of accounting standards and requirements across the finance organization.
    • Contribute to the professional development of team members and provide thought leadership on accounting best practices.

Job Specifications: 

Education:  

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.

Certifications/Designations: 

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) strongly preferred.

Experience: 

  • 10+ years of experience in accounting or finance, with deep knowledge of GAAP and STAT accounting regulations, practices, and procedures.
  • 8+ years of experience within property & casualty insurance required; specialty and reinsurance experience strongly preferred.

Knowledge, skills & abilities: 

  • Proven track record of researching, interpreting, and applying technical accounting standards.
  • Experience with SEC and statutory filings, including disclosures related to new accounting pronouncements.
  • Strong background in process improvement, systems implementation, and accounting transformation initiatives.
  • Excellent communication skills, with ability to distill complex technical accounting issues into clear guidance for diverse stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated leadership and collaboration skills, with the ability to influence at multiple levels of the organization.
