About the Department
This class is responsible for maintenance and operation of the ice arena and maintenance of parks, athletic fields and park facilities in order to provide a clean and safe environment for customers. Also responsible for park forestry, park facility and ice arena amenity construction, trail maintenance, landscaping, and park and ice arena improvement projects.
From approximately April - September this position will work in the Parks and hours will be 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Monday - Friday. From approximately October - March this position will work in the Arena with a start time between 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. and end between 10:00 p.m. - midnight. There will also be some weekends.Position Duties
Maintain ice arena building including electrical, flooring, plumbing, carpentry, HVAC system, and refrigeration system. Ensure compliance with EPA and OSHA rules regarding the ammonia refrigeration plant.
Perform building supervison and operation functions for ice arena including monitoring patrons, providing training and work direction to seasonal staff, and provide customer service.
Operate and maintain the recommended safety level for the operation of the ice resurfacer and ammonia refrigeration system to ensure safe consistent conditions.
Remove snow, ice and monitor conditions around Arena entrances. Assist with snow removal of parking lots.
Perform park improvement projects which includes roofing, bridge repair, concrete work, asphalt repair, playground preparation and restoration work.
Perform athletic field maintenance and general park maintenance work such ason call during weekends for emergency response to park facility issues.
Responsible for the application of noxtious weed control, which includes pesticides and insecticides.
Work on collaborative park projects such as river erosion control, restoration of fish habitat construction with the DNR and Dakota County Soil and Water Conservation District.
Inspect and repair park facilities and amenities, which includes monthly playground inspections.
Perform maintenance work associated with trails and trail amenities, this includes the removal and treatment of willows and buckthorn.
Perform park forestry work including cutting and removing diseased and hazardous trees, which includes stump grinding.
Perform preventative and routine maintenance on trucks, trailers, mowers, painter, weed whips, ice resurfacer, ice edger, skate sharpener, and other equipment.
Provides the training, supervision, and work direction to seasonal and part-time employees.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma; 1 plus years of construction related experience (using power tools, measuring, cutting, plumbing walls, etc); 1 year of equipment and small engine operations; 1 year of related ice arena operations experience strongly preferred; up to 1 year of specialized or technical training in refrigeration, facilities maintenance, or HVAC systems preferred; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the duties listed above.

- Valid Driver’s license
- Ability to obtain a Class B driver's license within six months of date of hire.
- Pesticide applicator’s license within six months of date of hire.
- Certified Playground Safety Inspector within six months of date of hire.
- HAZWOPER certification within six months of date of hire.
