About the Department

Distribution/Collection Crewmember is under the direct supervision of the Distribution/ Collection Foreman and/or Superintendent. Crewmember lays out, assembles, installs, and maintains pipe systems, pipe supports, and related hydraulic equipment for water and wastewater systems. Connects, bends, threads, and/or fuses pipes such as cast iron, PVC, ductile iron, copper, and PE. Crewmember may pour and finish concrete and operate various types of equipment. Crewmembers may perform meter changes in the field. Performs grounds and building maintenance, job site clean up, and other various duties within the scope of the job.
Effective April 6, 2018, all new Crewmembers’ must obtain and maintain a State of Alabama Grade I Water or Wastewater Certification of Competency within 2 years to remain employed. NOTE: Crewmembers working in a wastewater crew must obtain a wastewater collection certification and crewmembers’ working in a water crew must obtain a water distribution certification.

Position Duties

  1. Select the type and size of pipe, and related materials and equipment, such as supports, fittings, etc. as assigned by the foreman.
  2. Inspect the work site to determine the presence of obstructions and relay information to the foreman as required.
  3. Cuts, threads, fuses, and bends pipe as required including but not limited to cast iron, ductile iron, PVC, copper, and PE pipes.
  4. Assembles and installs a variety of metal and nonmetal pipes, tubes, and fittings, including cast iron, ductile iron, copper, PVC, and PE.
  5. Connects pipes using a variety of methods including threaded, bolted, fused, or cemented joints.
  6. Performs various cleaning and maintenance duties as required at the warehouse and in the field.
  7. Adheres to and follows all safety rules in the performance of duties.
  8. Operates various pneumatic and electrical tools including, but not limited to cutters, pumps, generators, jackhammers, fusion machines, etc. when required.
  9. Maintains an effective working relationship with the Superintendent, Manager, and other employees of the Water/Wastewater Department and the City of Florence.
  10. Uses hand tools and other tools such as a shovel, pick, sledgehammer, etc. when required.
  11. Operates machinery such as tractor, trencher, tapping machine, pressure cleaning truck, fusion machine, etc. when required.
  12. Removes obstructions from wastewater collection lines as required.
  13. Repairs or installs wastewater lines, manholes, etc., and appropriate fittings as required.
  14. Prepares and maintains work orders, daily worksheets, etc. as required by the Foreman or Superintendent.
  15. Maintains and accounts for all tools, safety equipment, and other equipment that is specifically assigned to the employee.
  16. Adheres to and follows all rules and procedures of the Water/Wastewater Department and the City of Florence.
  17. Reports for duty as required after-hours and during emergencies as required.
  18. Subject to being scheduled on-call for duty as assigned, and must report to the job site in a timely manner when contacted.
  19. Performs other duties as may be required by the Foreman or the Superintendent within the scope of this job.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Must have a high school diploma or general education degree (GED) and one to three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  2. Effective April 6, 2018, all new Crewmembers’ must obtain and maintain a State of Alabama Grade I Water or Wastewater Certification of Competency within 2 years to remain employed. Wastewater collection system crewmembers require a Grade I Wastewater Collection Certification of Competency and water distribution system crewmembers require a Grade I Water Certification of Competency.    
  3. Must have a valid Driver’s License (CDL/Class A), or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of employment


Other Qualifications

  1. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  2. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, and other employees of the organization.
  3. Must have the ability to apply concepts of basic mathematics.    Must have the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

Equipment/Tools Used
Ability to operate necessary equipment: TV truck, backhoe, cleaning truck, winch truck, dump truck, tapping machine, piercing tool, boring machine, etc.
