SALARY RANGE: $256,000
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves performing
professional medical services at a hospital, clinic or related health facility. The incumbent works on a full or part-time basis providing medical care and treatment to patients at County
health facilities. Work is performed under the general supervision of higher ranking professional and administrative staff. Supervision may be exercised
over lower level professional, technical and paraprofessional staff. Does
related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Assists with professional medical care of patients in a County hospital,
institution, or clinic, by making rounds, interviewing and examining
patients, giving and recommending treatments, and furnishing information for
patients' charts;
Interviews relatives of patients to discuss diagnosis, treatments and progress;
Confers with Director and Chief of Specialty on difficult cases and may make
recommendations for treatment;
Participates in medical conferences with other physicians and staff dealing
with therapy and treatment of difficult cases and makes recommendations
for disposition;
Instructs medical students, interns, residents, and para-professionals when
assigned to the service of a clinic;
Participates in research projects, plans programs, conducts investigations,
prepares reports for publication, gives lectures, and directs subordinate
personnel in research techniques;
Contacts physicians, health Departments, social agencies, clinics and hospitals
on patients referred for treatment;
Coordinates activities with other County departments, various divisions within
the hospital and clinics for related and supportive care;
Assists in surgical procedures;
Performs duties for the Director or Chief of Specialty when necessary.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES'AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Good knowledge of the principles, procedures, techniques and terminology of a
specific field of medicine or surgery; good knowledge of medical treatment
procedures in the service to which assigned; good knowledge of sterile
techniques when assigned to surgicial procedures; ability to perform minor
surgery and assist in more complex procedures; ability to make detailed medical
examinations, including histories, and to prepare comprehensive reports;
ability to get along well with others; initiative and resourcefulness; industry
and dependability; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the
position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from an approved medical school and completion of hospital residency program and a license to practice medicine in New York State.
NOTE: Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated
toward meeting full-time experience requirements.
