Who are we looking for?
GHD is seeking a Field Geologist to work with our Contaminated Assessment Remediation (CAR) group based out of our Indianapolis (Fishers), Indiana office. In this role you will conduct research or perform evaluations of a geological or hydrogeological nature. Create technical reports to inform proposals, budgets, support environmental impact assessments and regulatory compliance for civil infrastructure projects or projects to address environmental challenges. Using knowledge of various scientific disciplines, may collect, synthesize, study, report, and recommend action based on data derived from measurements or observations of soil, water, and other sources.
Working with an energetic and high performing team, this position offers a variety of work and will see you involved in:
- Performing a wide variety of field duties for environmental projects including drilling oversight, monitoring well installation, soil/groundwater/air sampling, water level monitoring, and contractor oversight.
- Conducting environmental sampling and monitoring for various media and constituents of concern by following established procedures.
- Performing inspections, maintenance, and operations and maintenance of remediation/mitigation systems.
- Opportunity to be part of a project team supporting environmental emergencies/emergency responses (ER) that includes air monitoring, contractor oversight, and reporting tasks.
- Assisting project team with preparing technical correspondence, project proposals, technical reports, work plans, and project specifications including cost estimates and budgets - data compilation, reduction, interpretation, evaluation/comparison to environmental regulatory standards.
- Assisting with equipment management, calibration, and record keeping in accordance with GHD’s ISO program.
- Insights and Reporting: Prepare and coordinate the completion of various data and analytics reports.
- Solutions Analysis: Analyze specific problems and issues to find the best solutions. Solutions could be technical or professional in nature.
- Geoscientific Studies and Interpretations: Contribute to well proposals by analyzing and interpreting geological/geophysical field data.
- Health, Safety, and Environment: Follow the organization's health, safety, and environment (HSE) policies, procedures, and mandatory instructions to identify and mitigate environmental risks and risks to the well-being of self and others in the workplace. Identify patterns of risky behavior within the team and take appropriate action to resolve them, escalating serious issues as appropriate.
- Personal Capability Building: Develop own capabilities by participating in assessment and development planning activities as well as formal and informal training and coaching; gain or maintain external professional accreditation, where relevant, to improve performance and fulfill personal potential. Maintain an understanding of relevant technology, external regulation, and industry best practices through ongoing education, attending conferences, and reading specialist media.
- Client & Customer Management (External): Manage relationships with small clients while also helping senior colleagues manage relationships with larger key clients and customers.
- Simulation and Modeling: Deliver the design and execution process of increasingly complex simulations or models, ensuring accurate and relevant output.
- Exploration Plan Development: Provide the design of exploration programs, including risk assessment and budgeting.
- Bid Solicitation/Request for Proposal/Tender Preparation: Gather information and resources, and draft and complete standard requests for bid solicitation requests for proposal (RFP) and requests for tender (RFT) on the requester side.
- Sampling and Testing: Collect a range of samples for laboratory testing and undertake testing in accordance with statutory frameworks and best practice to ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
- Mineral Reserves and Resource Assessment: Coordinate a range of complex mineral assessment operations, focusing on both quantity and quality of deposits.
- Project Management: Work within an established project management plan to achieve specific goals.
- Community of Practice Management: Participate in a community of practice in a defined area of expertise or consulting to begin to build own expertise.
What you will develop as part of the GHD Team:
- Sound understanding of soil, groundwater, and vapor investigation procedures and remediation/mitigation strategies.
- Communication and time-management skills necessary to be a valuable asset to project teams assembled to successfully deliver assigned tasks.

- Complex problem solving as it relates to environmental investigation, remediation and economic decision making.

- Knowledge of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other innovative technologies used for data collection and data analytics to support the preparation of reports and documents.

- Experience in coordinating and simultaneously managing multiple tasks while maintaining a high degree of attention to detail in a consulting environment.
What you will bring to the GHD Team:
- Must have a valid driver’s license and clean driving record
- Physically capable of working in non-ideal conditions, such as hot/cold temperatures, wet weather, outside, and around loud equipment and traversing rough terrains and ability to lift and carry 50 pounds
- Ability to work extended hours on a regular basis
- Ability to perform field work safely, effectively, and without posing a threat to themselves or others (i.e., fit for duty)
- Detail oriented with the ability to balance a diverse and changing workload
- Critical thinking and problem solving – ability to identify multiple solutions to a problem
- Willingness to respond to occasional call outs during non-routine working hours

- Must reside near our Indianapolis (Fishers), Indiana office or be willing to relocate to Indianapolis
- Willingness to travel, including overnights, to project sites in the Midwest
- Travel is expected up to 75% of the time, including overnight travel
- Field work 90% of the time
- Commitment to working in the office (when not in the field) on average 3+ days per week.
- OSHA 40 Hour HAZWOPER certification is a plus
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Hydrogeology, Soil Science, or similar
Experience
- 2-5 years of previous environmental sampling experience
