Lead the Transformation of Child and Family Services in Nunavut! 

The Child and Family Services (CFS) system in Nunavut is undergoing essential transformation — with an urgent need for more responsive, coordinated, and culturally rooted care. As the Director, Family Wellness - Statutory and Strategic Initiatives (“Statutory Director”), you will lead that change. This integral role will shape frontline social work practice, inspire a skilled territorial team, and translate the vision of a stronger, community-led Family Services system into action.

You will lead key reforms as part of Family Wellness Strategic Plan, strengthening documentation, improve social work practice, service delivery, and workforce development to build a trusted, culturally grounded system that protects children and supports families.. The goal: a system that protects children, supports families, and earns the trust of Nunavummiut through meaningful, lasting change.

 

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Assistant Deputy Minister, Family Wellness, you will drive improvements to policies, practices, and systems that affect Nunavut’s children and families. You will provide strategic oversight, lead risk and quality management efforts, and represent Nunavut’s Child and Family Services at the national level. Your leadership will help build a more responsive, consistent, and culturally respectful system that truly reflects the realities and aspirations of Nunavummiut. 

This Statutory Director ensures the safety, support, and care of all children served through the (CFS) system, in strict adherence to (CFS) legislation, standards, and procedures. The role provides strategic direction, policy and program guidance, and comprehensive oversight, including quality assurance, risk management, and evaluation. The role ensures the development and implementation of (CFS) standards, policies, and procedures, directs strategic initiatives and system planning, and leads projects and research for system improvement. Additionally, the role serves as the legal custodian for children in permanent care and serves as the temporary legal custodian for children in temporary care under the (CFS) legislation.  The Statutory Director also represents Nunavut at national CFS tables and provides territory-wide guidance on social work practice, supporting staff through clinical mentorship, standards development, compliance and continuous improvement in service delivery.

Qualifications

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through a recognized Bachelor of Social Work degree or related, along with five (5) years of work-related experience in child and family services and three (3) years of management experience showcasing strong leadership, strategic planning and team building skills in a relevant setting. A master’s degree in a related field is an asset.   This is a Position of Trust and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check is required.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land,Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
