Salary:  $23.54 per year. 

Union: This position is included in the Teamsters Local Union 249 bargaining unit and will be filled in accordance with the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Position Duties

General Application Requirements:

You must submit or show proof of all of the following at the time of filing your application (unless otherwise indicated below) or your application will be disqualified. Disqualifications based on any of these General Application Requirements are not subject to a Civil Service appeal.

  • Applicants must submit a complete application, including education, work experience, a resume (if applicable), and completed supplemental questions.
  • Applicants must become residents of the City of Pittsburgh prior to employment and must remain a resident throughout employment.

  • A current, valid Commercial Class A or B Pennsylvania Motor Vehicle Operator's License with the "L" air brake restriction lifted from the license is required at the time of submitting the application.  License must be maintained throughout employment.  Your driver's license will be verified prior to appointment to the position.
    • If you do not attach a copy of your current, valid Class A or B CDL, your application will be disqualified. 
    • Out-of-state candidates with a valid Commercial Class A or B Motor Vehicle Operator's License from another state must obtain a valid Commercial Class A or B Pennsylvania Motor Vehicle Operator's License and present to Human Resources within 90 days of hire.

NOTE: The Department may require a written/performance skills assessment at the time of the interview.  This is not a Civil Service Examination.

Other Qualifications

  • Drives a solid waste truck, collects refuse (i.e., household, bulk, or recycling), and empties containers on designated City routes.
  • Carries, lifts, and loads solid waste (weighing up to 75 to 100 lbs.) into truck daily.
  • Drives to and from landfill and on route.
  • Replaces refuse containers; ensures that the surrounding area is clean.
  • Performs daily pre- and post-inspection of vehicle (at beginning and end of routes), and reports malfunctions and maintenance needs.
  • Checks and monitors oil, water, gas, tire condition, etc.
  • Requests periodic maintenance on vehicle.
  • Maintains accurate records for equipment and work routes.
  • Cleans and maintains the cab area of the truck, ejection blade, and sweeper.
  • Observes proper safety precautions in the operation of the truck's hydraulic and packing system.
  • Receives complaints from residents and refers the complaints to the assigned foreman/supervisor.
  • Performs activities and functions of related lower-level personnel and other related tasks/duties as required.
