 Job Purpose:

The Cybersecurity Digital Forensic Technician is responsible for supporting digital forensic investigations, managing evidence intake protocols, and ensuring the operational integrity of forensic lab environments. This position executes forensic data extractions, maintains comprehensive documentation, and safeguards the chain of custody for digital evidence. Operating with a high degree of autonomy and technical expertise, this role collaborates with the forensic team to conduct targeted analyses, optimize forensic workflows, and uphold best practices in evidence handling, storage, and processing. 

Essential Duties

  • Support the intake, classification, and secure storage of digital evidence, ensuring integrity and continuity of the chain of custody through established protocols.
  • Independently perform forensic imaging and data extractions using approved methodologies and tools, maintaining rigorous documentation to support evidentiary standards.
  • Strategically prepare digital devices for forensic examination, optimizing workflows and ensuring readiness for analysis by senior forensic personnel.
  • Conduct preliminary forensic triage and analysis, applying professional judgment to identify relevant artifacts and trends; document findings in support of investigative objectives.
  • Oversee the maintenance and calibration of forensic laboratory equipment, ensuring operational readiness and compliance with technical standards.
  • Draft and contribute to comprehensive forensic reports, synthesizing findings and supporting case narratives in collaboration with lead analysts.
  • Serve as a liaison between forensic operations and internal stakeholders, facilitating cross-functional collaboration to advance casework and investigative priorities.
  • Monitor and enforce adherence to forensic best practices, legal standards, and internal policies, proactively identifying areas for process improvement.
  • Maintain and audit forensic activity logs and records, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and alignment with regulatory requirements.
  • Administer case and evidence management systems, providing oversight and ensuring data integrity across platforms.

 Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of digital forensics principles (acquisition, preservation, analysis, reporting).
  • Familiarity with imaging/extraction utilities (e.g., FTK Imager, Autopsy) and OSs (Windows, Linux, Android).
  • Ability to obtain Entry-level certifications (e.g., CCO, CCPA) within 12 months.
  • Strong documentation, organization, and attention to detail.
  • Discretion handling sensitive/privileged data.
  • Effective written and verbal communication; comfortable working both independently and in a team.
  • Ability to testify in a court of law if necessary.
  • Curiosity and willingness to learn new tools, methods, and scripting where applicable. 

 Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 1+ year of IT, cybersecurity, or digital forensics experience (internships/coursework acceptable).
  • Hands-on use of at least one forensic/acquisition tool (e.g., FTK Imager, Autopsy).
  • Basic understanding of cybersecurity and incident response concepts.
  • Ability to follow SOPs precisely and maintain accurate records. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate’s or Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Digital Forensics, or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with forensic analysis tools (e.g., Oxygen, EnCase, Cellebrite, XRY). 
  • Industry certifications (e.g., CCO, CCPA, CASA, Chip-off, JTAG) or willingness to obtain certifications. 
  • Experience handling and processing mobile devices and storage media.

Physical Requirements

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to: stand, sit, talk, hear, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer, telephone, and a variety of office equipment.
